SHANE

It killed me to leave Raika behind, but with Paimon attacking a portal with all his forces, it meant we needed to hit him with everything and everyone we had. Especially because it seemed Raika wouldn’t be able to do her part.

We would find a way to kill him. I would find a way.

As I raced through the castle’s hallways, weaving through the many vampires and witches rushing outside, where warlocks had opened up portals to take us to the battle ground, I texted Dom, Lucille, Hamill, and the others. I told them to come quick and help.

I also texted Tyren, ordering him to stay in the village and take care of the pack while we were gone. Of course, he called me right back and yelled at me, but I reminded him, “One beta has to stay with the pack. Plus, I only trust you to take care of Minsi and Raika if anything goes wrong.”

That shut him up.

I walked by one of the weapons rooms strategically hidden around the castle and paused. I didn’t need any weapons, but maybe I could take a few grenades or spell bombs and throw them before shifting. I found an empty satchel, filled it up with plenty of bombs, then joined the throng of supernaturals outside.

Drake and Thea stood to the side, coordinating the mess. Killian and the other princes stood beside the portals, telling supernaturals to cross and turn either right or left on the other side. Lavinia stood beside Killian, waiting for her turn to go through.

I approached the portals as the crowd crossed over. Then Dom, Lucille, Hamill, and a handful of others arrived to join me.

“Everything okay at the village?” I asked.

Dom nodded. “Rue and Lydia were warned of what’s happening.”

I frowned.

Lucille touched my arm. “The fight is elsewhere. They will be fine.”

I looked down at her. It wasn’t long ago that she was shallow and only cared about her looks. Now she was here, ready to go into battle with our pack. I was proud of her.

I opened my mouth to say as much, but then it was our turn.

Killian grasped my shoulder and I paused in front of the portal. “Go to the left. That’s where I’ll be going once I’m through.”

I nodded and walked through the portal.

The ground shook and a loud boom echoed through the air. I stared at the scene in front of me—pure chaos.

It was like one of those medieval battle scenes from movies—two thick walls pushing against each other, one made of supernaturals, the other made of demons and some hideous creatures—the Huddyriuns Raika had told us about.

“Go!” someone yelled behind me.

I lowered my head and turned left, as instructed. I weaved through the crowd, moving right behind one of those walls, and with the gate to the underworld behind us.

I saw a few faces I knew spread out: Hadrian, Rey, Erin, Ariella, Kaz, Norah, Doreen, and many others. Most of the high-ranking supernaturals weren’t in the thick of the fight, and I knew why.

“I don’t see him,” I said, looking around.

Dom scanned the crowd. “Paimon? I don’t see him either.”

A darkfire zipped toward us and we ducked. The bolt exploded on the ground not ten feet behind us.

Ariella joined us, panting. I had seen her almost at the front line, taking down demons with ease. “He’s not here.”

I balked at her. “What?”

“He came in with the first wave,” she said. “He taunted us, and when the battle started, he retreated. Hadrian thinks he’s behind their portal, biding his time while his demons kill us.”

“But we’re killing them too, right?” Lucille asked.

Ariella nodded. “It’s been a balanced battle so far. No one has gained any ground.”
