“Any news from the raid?” I asked her. Right after our conversation, Prince Cain had left with a big group of vampires to check the buildings and houses Ivy had told him and Drake about. Ivy told them which ones were decoys, and the ones served to house demons and weapons when they were on Earth.

Thea lowered her phone and shook her head. “Too many places to check.”

Her phone rang. She glanced at the screen and frowned. “Hey,” she answered.

Thanks to my wolf hearing, I heard as Drake said, “We failed.”

“She’s what?”

Dom rolled his eyes. “My mate, man. Anne is my mate.”

It sounded like a bad joke, but it wasn’t.

When I left the castle early this morning, I called Dom first thing. He had been acting weird since the fight at Nightshade yesterday and when I asked him what happened, he had evaded me. This morning, I gave him no choice. If he didn’t tell me, I would use my alpha’s command and make him tell me.

The last thing I expected him to tell me was that during the fight, he grappled with a female wolf from the Ironfang pack and the mating bond snapped. They didn’t even have a chance to talk about it.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked. “I would have given you more time.”

Dom shook his head. “No, you wouldn’t. Raika was missing and you wouldn’t wait a single second to come back here.”

Right. “Then I would have left you there and you would have come back later.”

Dom leaned against the wall of my office in our town hall. He crossed his arms. “I was too shocked to do anything. One moment, we were fighting for our lives and the bond snapped, the next moment, we were leaving.”

I frowned. “Did you get her number? Have you talked to her since then?”

Dom looked down. “No, there was no time. I barely learned her name before we left.” He pressed a hand on his chest. “Leaving her behind fucking hurt. It still does.”

I knew how that felt. “It won’t stop hurting until you’re with her. Like physically close.”

“Shit,” he muttered.

“Call Eike,” I told him. Dom had his number. “He’s her alpha now. Ask him to give you her number. Talk to her. Invite her to come here.” His eyes hardened. “You are mates, Dom. You’re meant to be together.”

“I know that, but maybe now that things are peaceful over there, I shouldn’t ask her to come here, to where the threat of a battle is hanging over our heads.”

One corner of my lips tugged up. His protective instinct was strong. “Then don’t invite her to come yet, but talk to her. She’s probably as shocked as you are.”

He gave me a side glance. “Who are you and what have you done with my brutish, dumb best friend?”

I chuckled. “One, I was never dumb. Two, I’m only brute when the occasion calls for it. Three, I’m mated, man. I know how that feels, and all I wish for you is to be with your mate.”

“Mate? Someone said mate?” Lucille walked into my office. Her eyes widened as she looked at a brooding Dom. “You have a mate? Who?”

He grunted, but told her about Anne.

“Ah, I can’t wait to meet her.” Then her lips pouted. “What about me, huh? No mates for me? I’ll be the crazy aunt to all your kids? Ugh.”

“Well—” I was going to joke she could be mated to Tyren, who had been smitten with her for a while now, but my phone rang. I picked it up and straightened in my chair upon seeing the name on the screen. “Kaz.”

“Hi, Shane, sorry for only getting back to you now. I was away, with no cell reception.”

He was probably in that secretive place, where his race and the dragons lived. “I understand.”
