“Well, Lord Drake and Prince Cain are taken,” I told her. “They have soulmates, so hold your horses.”

Ivy shook her head. “What a shame.”

I smiled. “Glad to see you’re still the same Ivy.”

“Hm, my pride is a little wounded, and I’m a little ashamed for taking this long to realize Paimon was using me, manipulating me, that he never cared and never will.”

I reached over and placed my hand on hers. “Forget about him. You have me now and I care.”

She smiled back at me. “I might have lied to you that we were best friends, though I had a feeling that would have been true if we had grown up together.”

“I had the same feeling,” I told her.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t spend the entire day with Ivy because I had to train with Thea. Since Thea knew I would spend a good part of the morning with Ivy, we had agreed to meet later, and I still had to rush to get to the clearing on time.

“Sorry, I’m late,” I said, panting.

“Only …” Thea glanced at her the screen of her phone. “Seven minutes. It’s fine and understandable. If I suddenly found out I had a sister and had brought her back into my life, I’m not even sure I would have come to training.”

One corner of my lips tugged up. “I thought about canceling, but I know this is important.” If not more important, at least right now. Until we defeated Paimon, none of us would be free and safe from him.

“Wise words,” Thea said. “Let’s start so you can go back to Ivy.”

I liked that.

As usual, my first spell was to conjure both the darkfire and the dragon’s magic as fast as I could and simultaneously. The two magics still warred inside me, wanting full control, but not like before. Now, it was almost like a faint scream in the back of my mind. I barely noticed it anymore.

Next, I played with both magics, shaping them as I wanted, throwing them here and there, then at targets Thea created with her magic. Then at moving targets.

Two hours in, I had an idea.

Thea conjured five blue figures spread out through the clearing. Instead of attacking them immediately, I closed my eyes and focused. I half expected Thea to ask me what was going on, but she knew I was up to something and she would wait to see what it was.

Inspired by her magic, I first conjured a figure made of darkfire in front of one of Thea’s. Then, I conjured one made of dragon’s magic.

Next, I conjured one made of both.

This time, the magics fought harder against each other. My teeth gritted as I commanded them into submission. I opened my eyes as the shape took form, the two magics intertwining in every limb. My arms shook with the effort to hold on to the figure.

My mixed-up soldier stood for whole eight seconds before it fizzled into bright smoke. The other two figures followed suit.

I fell to my knees, panting.

Thea smiled at me. “That was unexpected and incredible.”

I gestured to where my failed soldiers had stood. “It didn’t work.”

“But it did. You might not be able to hold on to them yet, but you were able to make them. That’s a big step.” She offered me a hand, helping me up. “Remember when you couldn’t even conjure both magics together and now … look at you!”

I tilted my head. “When you put it that way.”

She chuckled. “Come on. You deserve a break.” We walked to the edge of the clearing, where she had left a bag with water and snacks under the shade of a tree.

I grabbed a water bottle and drank half of it in one gulp. It was getting hotter and hotter, something I wasn’t used to. Until a few months ago, I had lived in a protected place, where it never got too hot or too cold.

Thea leaned against the tree, checking her phone.
