“What happened? Is there anything I can help you with?”

“It’s Raika …” I told him she now had more control of the dragon’s magic, but the witches determined the magic was killing her. We had been researching like crazy, but so far, we hadn't found anything promising. “I thought … maybe you know something they don’t and could help Raika. Save her.” I held my breath.

“The magic she has is stolen,” Kaz said with a bitter tone. He was still upset about what happened that day. “There’s nothing we can do to stop it from killing her.” I ran a hand over my face. “But … I can go there if you want. I can take a look at her, see if there’s anything I can do to ease her pain.”

Currently, she was not in pain, but I wouldn’t deny the help of a dragon shifter. “Sure. Please. Come.”

I told him where to find the castle, and Kaz assured me he would be here tomorrow morning. We turned off the call, and despite him telling me he didn’t know how to help her, I felt a waft of hope dancing around my chest.

“That is good, right?” Lucille asked. “Maybe he can do something for her.”

Dom nodded. “Maybe he’ll examine her, determine it’s not as bad as the witches think, and he’ll be able to cure her.”

I inhaled deeply, holding on to the hope in me. “He has to be able to do something.”

My phone rang again, this time it was Killian. I answered and he said, “Come to the castle for a meeting.”

* * *

Dom and I made our way to the castle. Lucille wanted to come, mostly out of curiosity, but since she wasn’t my beta, she couldn’t. I had invited Tyren. He was playing video games at Hugh’s house, but dropped it and met Dom and me halfway to the castle.

We arrived at the conference room beside Drake’s office, and I greeted everyone: Raika, Thea, Almae, Lavinia, Killian, Dorian, and Aston.

I went to Raika, settling in a chair beside her. Tyren sat next to me, and Dom sat on Tyren’s other side.

“What’s going on?” I asked Raika in a whisper.

“Lord Drake is—” She stopped and jutted her chin to the door. Drake walked into the room and everyone stopped talking.

He walked to the head of the table, but didn’t sit down. He looked at us, his eyes grave. “Ivy’s intel was good. The buildings and houses she told us about belong to Paimon, though most of them had been emptied by the time Prince Cain and his men arrived.”

“Most?” Killian asked.

Drake nodded. “There was one building Ivy said was housing most of the demons. It was clear they were evacuating when Cain arrived, but they were prepared.”

“What do you mean?” Almae asked.

“Cain and his men killed at least a dozen demons and emptied the place, but we lost two vampires in the fight,” Drake said, his voice grave.

Tension built in the air.

“But these buildings and houses are secured now, right?” Almae asked. “Paimon can’t use them anymore?”

Drake nodded. “Elisa and Zadkiel went with Prince Cain. She spelled the locations so if any demons try to enter it, a spell will hold them in place and we’ll receive an alert.”

Many heads nodded, mine included. That was a good plan.

“But there’s more,” Drake said. Everyone stilled. “I received word from Hadrian. Paimon and his demons attacked another underworld gate this morning.”

“What?” I asked.

Drake sighed. “No one was expecting it after what happened yesterday …” We all glanced at Raika. “But that was precisely why he did it. Now that Ivy is with us and telling us all of his plans, he’s changing everything.”

“Or she’s lying,” Prince Dorian said.

Raika stiffened. “She’s not lying.”

Dorian lifted both hands. “I’m bringing the possibility to the table.”
