“I am.” He brushed his knuckle against her jawline. “Because your answers are never what I expect.” He dropped his hand and frowned. “Because you’re amusing when you talk about your imaginary friend.”

“Because you never fail to annoy me,” she said.

He laughed softly. “I didn’t mean to annoy you.”

“I thought we were listing all the things we can’t stand about each other.”

“Because I find myself wanting the most ridiculous things.” He ran his thumb across the back of her knuckles. “Wanting you to only smile at me, to only wear my sweaters.”

Her lips curled. “I can’t wear your sweaters everywhere.”

“That’s why I say—the most ridiculous things.”

She nodded slowly. “Yes, quite ridiculous.”

Seth held his breath, waiting for Clary to give him a hint that she was at least somewhat enamored of him, as he was of her.

But she didn’t say anything.

He lifted her hand with the muffin. “Eat.”

Clary moved to take a bite, then paused. “Because you’re kind to me. Because you stepped up to protect me even when you saw me as your enemy.”

“You were never my enemy.”

“An associate of your enemy, same thing.” She took a bite of the muffin, then chewed for an insufferably long time of five seconds. “Because you’re brilliant, except when you fail to see my point about the Star Wars movies.”

Seth cupped a hand against her face and kissed her.

And he realized then that he might enjoy sweet desserts after all.

Clary broke from the kiss when she heard a knock on the door. She shouldn’t be kissing Seth in the office, should she?

She’d never been in a relationship at work. She wasn’t quite sure how she should handle it.

“Come in,” she said after straightening.

“I bring bad tidings.” Andrea strolled in. “Hugh Eolenfeld is here, raising a stink. Security refused to let him in, but he’s trying.”

Clary closed her eyes. “Thank you, Jesus.”

“You should be thanking your new security team.”

She ignored Seth. “Okay. Just keep him out.”

“He’s saying that if you don’t see him, he’s going to Seth’s place. The guards think he’s drunk. He’s going on and on about Seth owing him a Ferrari?”

Clary frowned.

“Oh, about that.” Seth grinned. “Hugh was staking out our building, and I didn’t want to lead him right to you. So I told Oliver I’d get him a new car if he sacrificed his.”

“I don’t understand,” Clary said.

“I told Oliver to drive into Hugh’s car.”

Clary’s jaw dropped. “What?”
