“Which I think you fully deserve, of course,” Clary said.

Seth poked his tongue into his cheek.

“Did I say something wrong?”

He ran his tongue under his teeth. “Clary, do you pity me?”

Her brows drew together.

“Are you with me because you feel bad about what Holly did to my brothers and me?”

Clary leaned away from him, and he instinctively reached out to grab her hand. Because he didn’t want her to move away.

Even if she only pitied him now, there was a chance that she could grow to love him, right?

“I don’t know what’s going on in your head,” Clary said. “But no, definitely no.” Her tongue darted across her lips. “I feel bad for you, I really do.” She licked her lips again. “My heart aches for what you and your brothers have been through, but I don’t pity you. I’m definitely not with you because … When you say ‘with you’, do you mean—”

He frowned. “I mean ...” He cleared his throat when he realized what he’d intended to say. You’re mine forever. It was either really romantic or just plain crazy, so he thanked God he managed to stop himself. “Dating?”

“Are you asking me?”

“Dating,” he said, careful to lower his tone at the second syllable. “Exclusively,” he added.

He took a moment to consider what other adjectives he could tag on without sounding like a love-sick puppy or a way-too-possessive boyfriend.

Clary chuckled softly. “Okay. I just wanted to be sure.”

“How could you not be sure? We kissed.”

“Right.” She laughed again, her head tipping forward as her gaze dropped from his. “Things aren’t really like that these days.”

“It is like that with me.”

She nodded slowly. “And with me.”

“Good.”

“So in conclusion, I’m not with you because I pity you.”

“So why are you with me?”

She bit down on her lips, then released them with a light smack.

He bent a little closer to her so he could tuck her hair behind her ear. “Is it so difficult to find a reason?”

“It’s scary that you’re forcing me to wear my heart on my sleeve while you give nothing away.”

Well, he couldn’t have that. “Because you had the courage to step in front of me when there was a gun pointed at us,” he said.

Her brows drew together, but it only made him grin.

“Because …” Seth smiled as he tried to put into words everything that she was.

“If that’s the only reason you can give me, I might have to reconsider.”

“You will not.”

“You’re way more bossy than I thought you’d be.”
