“Hugh’s fine. Oliver aimed for the engine.”

“Oliver could’ve been hurt.” Clary shook her head. “Don’t do anything like that again.” She sighed. “Just let him in.”

“Why?” Seth asked. “Because of the Ferrari? I’m not paying him anything.”

“I don’t want him to turn up at the house.”

“No.” Seth turned to Andrea. “No.”

Andrea nodded slowly. “I like you, Seth.” She pointed at Clary. “But she’s my boss.”

Clary wriggled her brows and took another bite of the muffin.

“I won’t let him use my name to threaten you,” Seth said.

“And if he shows up at home?”

Seth shrugged. “Then he shows up. Don’t let him think he can manipulate you like this.”

“Tell the guards to ignore him, then.”

“Okay.” Andrea gave a nonchalant wave. “I’m heading back to the hotel. Call if you need anything.”

Clary glanced over at her desk. “Let me pack up. We’ll still have to deal with Hugh back home, and I’m hoping we can get it settled before Elton finds out.”

CHAPTER 14

Clary and Seth got back to the apartment building just as Hugh was getting out of the back seat of a black car. His shiny brown leather shoes and khaki slacks appeared first, then with some effort, the rest of him emerged.

He had a light blue shirt on, and in one hand was a dark blue blazer. His wavy, strawberry blond hair that was usually slicked back had flopped over his round face.

Huge roughly ran his hand through his hair, pushing the wavy locks back temporarily, then giving up when they fell right back over his eyes.

Clary watched as Hugh tripped over his own feet, but with a wild swing of his arms, he managed to keep himself upright.

She sighed softly.

“At least he has sense enough not to drive,” Seth said.

Clary hadn’t even thought about that. She should have made sure Hugh wasn’t driving. “I’ll get out here. See you inside.”

Seth stopped his car outside the metal shutter gate and shot her a bored glare.

“Yes, I know. You won’t do that.” She shrugged. “I thought I should still give you an out, just in case you’re in an I-can’t-deal-with-an-Eolenfeld mood.”

“Seems like you are.”

She laughed softly.

“Would you help me understand something?”

She nodded.

“You’re not siblings,” Seth said. “I don’t think you two are even friends.”

“We’re not.”

“So why do you tolerate him?”
