She rubbed her hands together. “And the mysterious secret.”

Seth laughed softly and opened the door. His room wasn’t that much different from hers. His just had an additional desk and chair so he could do administrative work in his room. If he wanted to fix something, he’d still go down to the small workshop he’d set up in the garage.

“You have a desk.”

“You can come in and use mine if you need to.” He closed the door. “I don’t mind.”

Clary stopped in the middle of the room and turned to him. “Seth, all Aldric did with his tirade was make me think he’s an ungrateful brat.”

Seth leaned back on the door. “Let’s stop talking about that.”

She pursed her lips. “I didn’t mean to annoy you.”

“You’re not annoying me, Clary.” He crossed over to her in three long steps.

Weaving his fingers into her hair, he cupped her neck and kissed her. His tongue swept into her mouth, and he walked her back until they were against the wall.

He put a hand on the back of her head and straightened.

Her eyes were wide as she looked up at him. Her mouth was slightly open, and she seemed at a loss for words.

“When you look at me like that …”

She blinked twice, but didn’t tear her gaze from him.

“When you defended me to Aldric …”

“You need to finish your sentences.”

His lips curled. “I don’t know how to complete them.” He tucked her hair behind her ear, because he didn’t want anything, not even a single strand of hair, blocking her face. “I don’t know what I want. I just want … more.”

Her eyes grew wider. “Oh.” She bit down on her lips.

“I said something wrong.”

“No. It’s just that …” She dropped her gaze and stared at her shoes. “Let me preface it by saying that it isn’t just because I’m a Christian. I want to share all of me with only one person. The thought that someone could know me intimately and then might go back to becoming a stranger again is … not for me.”

Seth frowned. “Wait. I’m not asking you to sleep with me, and I kind of already figured that out. Not the reason, but you seemed pretty tight with your imaginary friend.”

And honestly, it wouldn’t matter, but he liked that he would be the only one to ever know her that way. Wait.

“Oh.” She tipped her chin up. “So what are you asking?”

“I don’t know.” Maybe he did, but it wasn’t something he could tell her without sounding insane.

She chuckled.

“I just …” He pressed a forearm against the wall and stared down at her.

She pressed a hand to his chest and closed her eyes.

“What are you doing?”

“Checking if your heart’s beating as wildly as mine.”

Seth stepped away from her. Of course it was. “Star Wars?”

“I’m more interested in the secret.”
