CHAPTER 9

Brunch was a lot more subdued than last night. Elton had decided he’d rather sleep than eat, and Oliver and Andrea were nursing headaches.

Zane was quiet as usual, and Seth was trying his best not to glare at Aldric who wouldn’t stop glancing over at him and Clary.

“Did something happen last night?” Zane asked, his gaze on Aldric. “What did you do?”

Aldric’s eyes widened. “Nothing.”

“He definitely did something,” Andrea said. “Or he wouldn’t have been like a pathetic puppy begging for Clary’s forgiveness this morning.”

“I didn’t beg for her forgiveness.”

“You should,” Seth said.

“Elton said plenty too.”

True. But Elton hadn’t put all of Seth’s inadequacies out on display. He glanced over and cracked a smile at Clary. It hadn’t seemed to matter to her.

But was it only a matter of time before she got tired of dealing with his brothers? Before she saw how boring his life and personality were?

He turned to her again when she reached across and stole the piece of banana pancake he’d just cut.

“Yours is nicer.”

“What’s wrong with yours?”

“The blueberries are sour.”

“And you’re only realizing that now?” Seth reached across for her plate, but she smacked his hand away. “I’m switching our plates. I’m not stealing your food.”

Zane laughed.

“I know, but no. I just wanted that piece.”

“I’ll change with her.” Aldric reached for her plate, but Zane grabbed his shoulder and dragged him back.

“What—” Zane waved it off.

“Nobody needs to switch food with me. I ordered the blueberry pancake. I’ll just eat mine.” She leaned on Seth’s shoulder. “And steal a few pieces from you.”

After breakfast, Andrea headed back to the hotel so she could go back to sleep. Zane stayed to help with the picking up, and surprisingly, so did Aldric.

“I think Aldric’s really sorry about what he said last night,” Clary said when they went back upstairs, leaving Aldric and Zane to clean up. “But he deserves to stew for a few more days.”

Seth ran his tongue under his teeth.

“Are you really angry with him?”

He’d never felt this betrayed.

“He came to tell me that he didn’t mean anything he said.” She licked her lips. “He knows the sacrifices you made for them.”

All the more reason for Aldric to keep his mouth shut.

Clary tipped her head to the side to look up at Seth. “Why do I feel like you have a lot going on in your mind?”

He cracked a smile as they stopped outside his room. “My room.”
