“Is it weird that we’re upset because someone isn’t dead?” she asked. “It feels wrong.”

“Can I ask for another Christmas present?”

“The whole twelve days of Christmas thing is only a song.” She tried to step back, but he refused to let go, so she tried to tip her head back.

But he was holding her so tightly against his chest that she couldn’t.

“Are you trying to suffocate me?”

He released his hold around her head, giving her space to look up at him.

“What would you like?” she asked. “A new tree? We have enough decorations for another tree.” They probably had enough for three or four more trees.

“A hug every morning.”

She shook her head. “What if I’m annoyed with you and I don’t want to give you a hug? What if you are annoyed—”

“A hug every morning, as long as you feel like giving it.”

She rested her head against his chest, listening to his steady heartbeat. “Did you enjoy yourself last night?”

“How are you feeling? Headache?”

“I’m not hungover.”

Seth leaned back to look at her. “How are you not?”

She laughed softly. “I drank a lot less than you thought. Sometimes I just take sips.”

“I was watching you the whole night. I saw how much you drank.” He tucked her hair behind her ear. “You mixed plenty of Coke in with the hard liquor when you thought no one was watching, but you drank plenty.”

She gave him a sheepish smile. “I’ll blame Grandma Moretti and Mr. E for that. They’re such a bad influence.”

He grinned, but that dazzling smile disappeared almost immediately. “Do you have to go?”

“To Thailand? I already said no.” She licked her lips. “I’m not sure if it’s the end of the conversation, though.”

He weaved his fingers, which had lingered along the nape of her neck, down the ends of her hair. “We could go together.”

Her eyes widened. “You’d go to Thailand with me—to see Mr. E.”

“You said it was difficult for you to say no to them.”

She sighed softly.

“So if you have to go, I’ll go with you.”

“But what about the monster we created? I don’t trust your brothers to leave the tree alone.”

Seth cupped his hands against her face, then tugged her close to give her a peck on the forehead. “Clary, about last night.”

She blinked and waited for him to continue. “What about it?”

He shook his head. “Never mind.”

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.” He released her and took a step back.
