“Mr. E.”

“Your nonna will be coming too.”

“I have work to do here. I’m hoping to get the compensation for the affected customers rolling.”

“Nothing is worth your safety, Clary. That can wait. We can pay out more. I—”

“I want to stay.”

The silence on the phone was deafening, before it was broken by several soft raps on the door.

Clary pushed the blanket off herself. “I’m fine. I’ll be okay,” she said as she strode over to the door. “I’ll talk to you later, okay?”

“Clary.”

She stopped at the door. “I have my necklace on me twenty-four seven.” The pendant on the necklace would transmit a distress signal when pressed, sending the cops directly to the GPS location. “I never take it off.”

Mr. E sighed. Do you intend to stay at Seth’s place for now?”

“He has a spare apartment in the building. I thought of moving in there with my new assistant.”

“Andrea Lowe.”

“Yes.”

“We’ll talk again.”

Why did that sound so ominous? Clary opened the door after Mr. E ended the call.

Seth stood outside in long black sweatpants and a dark blue T-shirt. “Edward Eolenfeld?”

“You got the call.”

He nodded.

“It was fun while Gavin was dead,” she said, and his eyes slitted. “Okay.” She held her hands up in peace. “Be serious.” She dropped her hands and leaned against the door frame. “Mr. E asked me to join him for Christmas.”

Seth opened his mouth, then shut it.

“He’s hiding from his parasites.” The rest of the Eolenfelds who were waiting eagerly for him to die so they could get their inheritance. “He’s in Thailand, apparently.”

Seth nodded slowly. “So … you’re leaving?”

“I can’t leave you on your own to stare at the monstrosity downstairs. It’s too heavy a burden.”

His lips curled, then he stepped forward and wrapped his arms around her. “So you’re staying?”

“I think so.”

His brows puckered.

“I think Mr. E might be up to something. He sounds like he is.” She shrugged and waved it off.

“I’m sorry.”

“Because Ressler isn’t dead?”

Seth nodded.
