“But ...” Oliver looked over at Seth. “I don’t know if ...”

“We can bring your bed with us.” Seth sat next to Clary. “And you won’t have a key to the house.”

Clary bit down on her lips and turned to Seth. “The French doors at the back of the house don’t need a key.”

Oliver couldn’t stay in the apartment either. He might fall through the hole while sleepwalking.

“I’ll sleep on the couch tonight. You’ll be fine,” Seth said to Oliver and draped his arm across the back of Clary’s chair.

“Okay.” Oliver nodded once. “I vote we go.”

Since it was clear that Elton was the only one who had a problem with it, the rest of them delved into the logistics of things.

Clary shifted closer and rested her head against Seth’s shoulder while the discussion continued onto what they were going to do about the apartment building. She was quiet throughout.

He smiled when he glanced at her, realizing that she’d fallen asleep. He grazed his fingertip down her arm, thankful that she was here, next to him—alive and well.

Right now, resting against him, she seemed completely tranquil and oblivious to the world. And it seemed so precious that she was his.

He’d never thought he’d have more in life than what he already had, never imagined wanting to have another person in his life.

Seth ran the pad of his thumb across the back of Clary’s hand resting on his leg. He stopped right under the ring.

“You should ask her.”

Seth looked up across the table at Oliver. He wasn’t sure when they had all stopped talking, but they were all staring at him and Clary now.

“I think she’ll say yes,” Oliver continued. “You did just save her life.”

Elton frowned at Oliver. “Are you crazy? Do you think this is the eighteen-hundreds? They’ve only just met each other.”

“I don’t want her to marry me because she’s grateful,” Seth said, ignoring Elton.

Aldric rolled his eyes. “So you want her to want to marry you?”

“What’s wrong with that?” He played with the ends of her hair.

He’d been half serious when he joked with her before. She hadn’t seemed taken aback by what he said, but she had thought he was merely joking.

Elton opened his mouth, but Aldric interjected, “He was going to die for or with her. Do you think he really cares when they met?”

Clary shifted, and everyone fell silent, but she merely nuzzled her cheek against him. Another small touch that felt so precious.

“And look at that.” Aldric jabbed a finger at Seth. “Clary’s one of us. Get over yourself.”

Oliver hushed Aldric while Zane sighed.

“I spotted Pete Laker this morning,” his eldest brother said. “I was about to speak to him when Ron took off running. When I got back, Laker was nowhere to be found.”

“He’s still watching Clary.”

“Who’s that?” Oliver asked.

“A private detective,” Seth said. “He sent Clary several texts, warning her about me.”

“Has Edward Eolenfeld spoken to you regarding Clary?” Zane asked. “Does he disapprove?”

Seth shook his head. “The opposite.”
