Seth helped her with it, then folded it over his arm.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea to ask,” she continued. “I’d rather not drag more people into this.” She fell silent as they headed up the stairs. “There’s something else I’m concerned about.” And that was why she’d texted Emily. “The news articles about me brought up where I studied and my previous job. One even found out that my parents used to work for the Eolenfelds.” She licked her lips. “If a reporter asks about you …”

“You can say whatever you want, but I believe the term is ‘boyfriend.’”

“I’m not concerned about the term. I’m worried they’ll dig up your past.” She frowned. “How have you kept things under wraps?”

“I think Edward Eolenfeld has wiped the history of us ever being adopted by Holly.”

Clary’s brows flicked up. “That doesn’t eliminate the people who remember.”

“I’m not sure what he did, but I am sure money can buy silence.”

“So I don’t have to worry about a reporter finding out about Winnie and alleging or insinuating that you guys were involved? Because that can’t be good for your reputations. It probably wouldn’t affect Oliver, but the rest of your brothers …”

“Thus far, no one has found out anything.”

“No one ever asked about your past?”

“I always just say I was an orphan, then was placed in a foster home and aged out.”

She nodded.

“Don’t worry about us.”

“Is this a bad time to bring up Pete Laker?”

“What about him?”

“I want to speak with him—without you or Zane or any of your brothers.”

Seth sighed.

“You know he won’t tell me anything if you or any of your brothers are there.”

“I don’t think it’ll be safe.”

“I’ll choose the location.”

“Then set it up here. We’ll all wait upstairs.”

She shot him a glare. “I’m sure he’ll know.”

“He believes Movement is building cell towers and making people ill.”

“Maybe he was just sending whatever negative stories he could dig up.”

“Or maybe he thinks you’re dating the devil and might kill you for siding with me.”

Clary laughed softly, then shook her head. “Sorry. I shouldn’t have laughed, but Seth.” She cleared her throat. “You always jump to the worst possible conclusion.”

“It’s how we survived.”

She cupped a hand against his face. “Then stop just trying to survive. You don’t have to do that anymore.”

He blinked. “In this situation, I think it’s better to be safe than sorry.”

Clary pursed her lips. “I’ll be prudent. I’ll take Andrea with me. She has no links to you guys, and she’s an ex-detective. I don’t think Pete will have a problem with her, and Andrea’s already agreed.”
