“No, what were you going to say?” he asks, interested.

I wet my lips. “I thought you’d call.”

Connor smiles. “Do you want me to call you?”

“No, you don’t have to. It’s a busy week and…” I shake my head. “It’s not like we’re dating. I don’t know why I even?—”

“Dana.” His expression drips with tease. “Lesson two.”

Don’t be shy.

Tell me what you want me to do.

“Call me tonight,” I say, a fresh wave of confidence trembling my fingertips.

Connor gives a smiling nod. “So, what does Beta Kappa have you girls doing?” he asks.

“Oh, well…” I realize that we’re slightly blocking the path, so I shift forward to stroll on the sidewalk. Connor stays in stride with me. “Monday, I had Mocktails in Socks.”

“What’s that?”

“We sat around in big comfy socks and drank fruity concoctions while Beta Kappas told us funny stories — it wasn’t much different from the Beta Brunch, actually,” I say. “Minus the help, of course.”

He laughs.

“Tuesday was Puppies in the Park,” I say. “Exactly how it sounds. We went to the park and there were puppies.”

“Puppies are fun.”

“It was fun.”

“Do you have anything today?”

I shake my head. “A few classes. Other than that, my schedule is clear until tomorrow. Then, I have something called Speed Friendship in the grass outside of Strong Hall.”

“Speed Friendship?”

“Speed Friendship.”

“What the hell is that?”

“I have no idea.”

“Speed Friendship,” he repeats.

“Yeah, it doesn’t get any clearer the more we say it, does it?”

“Speed Friendship.”

I laugh. “Stop.”

“Well, we haven’t gotten to do anything like that,” he says. “It’s mostly been sitting around the Delta Xi house playing drinking games. Except for this, which no one will give us any hints about.” He reaches into his back pocket and withdraws a heavily folded sheet of paper. “See what you can make of it?” he asks, offering it to me.

I unfold it. “Attendance is mandatory,” I read aloud before eyeing the patterns of symbols along the outer rim.

“Knowing where we’re supposed to be and when would be nice,” Connor says.

“When did you get this?”
