“Saturday, after the brunch.”
“And you’re sure what it is hasn’t already happened?” I ask.
His shoulders sink. “No. Fuck.”
I focus on one of the symbols and hum softly.
“What?” he asks, interested.
I squint. “I’ve seen one of these before.”
“Where?”
I glance up, pausing my stride as I look around the quad. It’s crowded today, as it is almost every day around lunch, and I know I saw this symbol around here just yesterday…
“There!” I say, pointing at a young woman sitting alone on a bench.
She’s wearing a blue T-shirt, the front printed with one of the symbols on the flyer.
Connor snatches the paper from my hand and looks at it, then at the girl. His eyes widen in surprise, the edges of his lips curling into a grin.
We race toward the bench together. It’s not far and the sprint barely leaves me winded at all.
“Excuse me,” Connor says, stopping in front of her. She looks up from her notebook, a pencil in one hand, a to-go cup of coffee in the other. “Do you know anything about this?” he asks, holding out the flyer.
She doesn’t take it. She merely tilts her head to read it, the silently smiles.
She motions him closer. I stand back as Connor steps forward and bends to lower his ear to her level. She whispers to him, the sound far too low for me to hear.
Connor steps back. “Thank you,” he tells her.
With a nod, the girl returns to her notebook and coffee.
“What’d she say?” I ask as he returns to me.
“9:17 PM,” he says.
“That’s… exact.”
“Not exact enough,” he says, studying the flyer again. “Still don’t know the location. Or what night.”
“Someone does,” I say. “And I bet they’re all wearing a shirt with one of these symbols on it.”
Connor grins as he reaches for his phone. “And I think you are right,” he says, swiping to dial a number.
I roll my eyes. “I swear, you guys don’t notice anything.”
He places the phone against his ear. “Ben, Dana figured out the flyer,” he says, his playful eyes never leaving mine. “You guys on campus?”
I blush. He even gave me credit.
