“I came to see you.”

My stomach erupts with butterflies. “You did?”

“You’re surprised,” he says, noting my reaction.

“No. Well, maybe. I haven’t heard from you since… I saw you last.”

“Only two days ago.”

“Right.” Just be cool. “I just… wasn’t sure if I’d done something wrong.”

“Like what?” he asks.

“Your highness.”

I flinch at the guy bowing to me on the sidewalk. “Oh,” I say, inclining my head. I’ve learned that unless I acknowledge them this way, they won’t leave. “Good sir.”

With a smile, he rises and continues on, but not before offering Connor a quick “Delta Xi” under his breath.

“Delta Xi,” Connor repeats, his gaze narrow. “That happen a lot?” he asks me.

“Every day now,” I say with a nod.

He hums, his expression blank as he watches the other man leave. “Emerson isn’t still doing that, is he?” he asks, a fierce protectiveness in his irises.

I shake my head. “No. I haven’t really seen him since the Beta Brunch,” I say, curious. “You think he’s sincere?”

“No,” Connor says, a blunt point on the word. “Do you?”

I consider it. “Maybe.”

He goes quiet, looking off into space for a few moments.

I swallow hard. This sudden interruption was probably enough to weasel out of this conversation if I really want to, but… “So, you don’t want to back out?” I ask.

“Back out?” he asks.

“Of… us,” I say. “What we’re doing.”

Connor looks at me, and my skin burns beneath the full force of his eyes. “No,” he says. “Why would you think that?”

I look down to hide my blush. “I haven’t heard from you.”

“I’ve been busy,” he says. “First game is on Saturday and Coach Thomas has us drilling like crazy with the starter team to get them ready. He seems kinda bitter about losing his job, too, so… he’s taking it out on us, I think. Especially me considering…”

“Your dad is replacing him.”

“Right.”

“Well, I figured,” I say. “Alex and Ben came home exhausted yesterday.”

“Not to mention the Rush Week stuff at Delta Xi. I barely have time for anything else.”

I chuckle. “No kidding. I just…”

“What?”

“Nothing.”
