“Who are you? Why are you making a move on my wife?”

“You sure she wants to be your wife?” Roach asked Warren as he winked at Rose.

Warren surged to his feet. He was across the room with Roach pinned to the wall before anyone else could move.

“I know you’ve heard of me. Everyone in this clubhouse knows me or at least has heard of me. You know that I have erased people’s entire lives for less than eye fucking my wife. Back off, or I will make your death slow and as painful as I can.”

“You what?” Rose gasped.

“Didn’t bring the black bag,” Brooks grumbled, stealing Warren’s coffee and his seat beside Rose. “Morning. I used your shower.”

Rose couldn’t answer. Her jaw was on the floor. Warren had Roach pressed into the wall. For what? To assert his dominant claim? It was insane. He didn’t put this much effort into the last year of their marriage. Why now?

“Warren, let my Ladybug go. He didn’t say anything that I haven’t already thought. If you remember, I was the one that filed for divorce. Any chance you signed the papers?”

“Hell no. I’m not signing those papers. We are not getting a divorce,” Warren roared.

“Christ on a crutch, man. How can you be so dense? You had all night and the shower this morning, and you didn’t tell her,” Brooks grouched.

“Tell me what?” Rose looked at Brooks and then over at Warren. Varying looks of concern that edged toward pity looked back at her as she scanned the room.

“Everyone knows, but I don’t. Typical Warren.”

Rose didn’t think it was possible for her heart to break anymore. The pain in her chest told her she was wrong. Rose retaliated the only way she knew how. She snatched the knife from the sheath around Brooks’ ankle. As she stood, Rose sent it sailing across the room before Brooks noticed it was missing. The knife whizzed by Warren’s ear and stuck half a blade deep in the wall, inches from Roach’s head.

“Lucky bastard,” Roach let out an aroused groan. “The second you are out of the way, I am making my move.”

“You can keep your secrets,” Rose said, ignoring Ladybug. “Do me a favor and sign the papers.”

Rose walked away. Her heart was crushed, and her soul was shattered. Warren wasn’t here because he truly wanted her. He was here because he didn’t want to go through a divorce.

Her body vibrated with hurt and rage. Slamming the door shut, Rose made sure to turn the lock before she started pacing across the room. She had to get out of there. Maybe she could set up a payment plan with Bunny so he wouldn’t kill Lucas. Her head throbbed in time with her heart.

There was no good way out of the compound when it was locked down. Rose eyed the only escape route left. It looked like it was going to be out the window. Tonight. If she could last that long. What was she thinking if she could last that long? This was the part that sent Warren running. He had overstayed the normal amount of time she was allowed to have anyway. He was probably already in his truck. She could sit by herself in her bedroom until the sun went down.

Rose nodded to herself. That was plan B. Stay in her room and escape out the window after dark. Her car was parked beside the garage. She was on foot if Birdy or Ladybug found the extra key in the magnetic holder. If not, she would drive away. Preferably driving since she had no idea where she was going. Should she stay in New Mexico? It probably wasn’t wise. Maybe Colorado or back to Texas. Texas was big enough to get lost in. With so many options, it was hard to decide.

Her phone dinged, interrupting her planning. Lucas finally replied.

Lucas: Sorry.

Rose wanted to explode. What in the fresh pits of hell had he done this time? Was it not enough she was working off his debt?

Rose: Why?

Lucas: Going silent. I will contact you when it’s safe. Ditch your phone. Use the code. TELL NO ONE

“Oh no.”

Rose’s vision clouded as her hands shook. The code was only for actual I-don’t-know-if-I-will-be-breathing-tomorrow emergencies. She didn’t bother to reply. He was already wiping the phone to toss it.

“Petal,” Warren said softly.

“Shit,” Rose screeched. “Drag your feet or something. Are you trying to give me a heart attack?”

“Who are you talking to?”

“What is it any concern of yours?”
