Rose rubbed her head. Her scalp stung, but she was free. Warren almost kissed her. She needed to get a grip. He was just there to string her along like all those other times. Taking a deep breath, she tried to harden her heart. Rose had no idea if it would work, but she had to try something.

Really, it wasn’t her fault. Who wouldn’t want to jump a man who looked like him? Come on, all those muscles and tanned skin. When you added in his handsome face and the way he looked at her, it was hot enough to send her panties up in flames. It wasn’t fair. Who could resist all that, plus the tattoos and that dark-as-night hair with eyes blue enough they could use them in an ad for one of those exclusive beach resorts?

So far, it wasn’t her, but she had to change that. Right now. Warren was no longer going to be her kryptonite. There was a new Rose in the shower. One that didn’t melt into a puddle of please fuck me every time he turned those eyes her way. That’s right. She was not going to allow this to happen. Her heart was hardened. Cold like stone at the top of a snowy mountain. All she had to do was get out of the shower.

Warren watched his wife in amusement. She was psyching herself up for something. She had no idea he was standing there holding her wedding ring. Wet and naked, he couldn’t remember her ever looking as heart-stoppingly stunning as she did right then. He was going to win her over. There was no other option. It was the most important mission of his life. One that he wasn’t about to fail.

“Warren.” Rose cleared her throat and looked up at him.

“Petal.” Warren interrupted her. He hauled her against him. Their slick skin slid together. He could feel the stiff peaks of her nipples against his stomach. His mouth began to water. Desire spiked through him, sending what little blood left in his head to his cock. He was harder than he ever remembered being. When she bit her lip and rocked her hips, he knew he had to hurry this up, or he would have her pinned to the wall with his cock buried deep inside her. The words coming out of his mouth would not be the confession he needed to make.

“This has been next to my heart since I woke up and found it by my pillow. It belongs on your finger.”

“You kept it?” Rose whispered in disbelief.

“Hey, if you two are done using all the water, we have shit to take care of.”

“Go away,” Warren roared. “I’m busy.”

“Get done,” Brooks yelled back through the closed door.

“It’s fine,” Rose gulped. “I need to go check on Franny.”

She would never admit it out loud, but she gladly gave thanks for Brooks in the moment. The whole hardening her heart wasn’t working. It was time to come up with plan B. The first step was getting away from Warren. After that, the details were a little fuzzy.

Ripping open the shower curtain, she dodged his hands as she got out.

“No time for that.” Rose practically ran out the bathroom door.

“This isn’t over,” Warren warned.

That was exactly what she was afraid of. How could one stupid organ not take a hint? Damn hearts. It was true. The heart wanted what the heart wanted, and it didn’t seem to care what the brain said. How could she get her heart and her pants to agree with her brain? She had to figure that out before her husband made her forget why it mattered.

Chapter 14

Rose made it out of her room before Warren did. She couldn’t bring herself to look at Brooks. If she did, she worried she would have jumped into his arms to thank him for saving her mushy heart. Obviously like a rock wasn’t in the cards for her. Without a plan on how to harden the stupid organ, Rose went in search of coffee.

Thank God the coffee pot was in the bar and not the kitchen. It survived the blast. Breakfast would be iffy at best, but at least no one would die without their caffeine hit. A few members milled around the common area. Rose recognized most of them. Her mind drifted off as she took in every detail of each of them. Was one of them having clandestine meetings by the gate while everyone else was asleep? She was so caught up in her thoughts she never noticed the room filling up.

“Fuck War, I thought you said she would sleep when she was in bed with you. It doesn’t look like Thorn slept. She looks like shit.”

“Birdy,” Rose gasped in surprise. Of course, they were all there. And they were staring at her. It was just her lucky day.

“My wife would have slept if she wasn’t so damn stubborn.”

“Sounds like you need to fix more than you thought you needed to,” Tank added as he plopped down beside them.

“You know them?” Rose stuttered, looking from Warren to Vulture and then to Tank. None of them said a word. “I’ll just take that as a yes since none of you decided to wear your big boy boxers today. Where is Franny?” Rose asked. “Is she okay? She wasn’t hurt yesterday, and you didn’t say anything, was she?”

“Thorn, honey, I promise Franny is fine. She was sleeping so hard she didn’t even move when I got out of bed.”

“Thorn?” Warren raised an eyebrow at her.

“Bunny calls me Thorn when he is happy. Thorn In My Ass when he is a little less than happy.”

“Rosey,” Roach’s eyes narrowed on Warren when he walked into the room. “This the reason you won’t jump on the Roach train?”

“Ladybug, I hope that sounded better in your head. Roach train sounds like you need to call an exterminator.”
