Rose tucked the phone behind her back and powered it down. She needed to destroy it, but she would have to wait until Warren said whatever he came to say and left.

“Anything to do with you is my concern.”

“Warren,” she sighed on the edge of a breakdown. “I don’t want to keep fighting with you. Been there, done that, sold the t-shirt at a garage sale. If you cannot admit you don’t love me anymore, fine. Not my problem. I started the process. Eventually, it will get finalized. There is nothing you can do. I can’t live like this,” she whispered, sniffing back tears. “I won’t be kept in a little box, shoved in the corner until you want to play with me.”

“Petal,” Warren sighed. “I fucked up baby. Give me a chance to explain.”

“Explain what? Where the hell you disappeared to the last year? How about all your friends out there? Or even better, let’s get to the part where you erase people. Yeah, let’s start there.”

“Okay.”

Rose blinked slowly. Did he just agree to talk to her?

“I’m serious, Warren. No half-assed excuses or lame gestures because you are uncomfortable, and then you go hide at work.”

“I’m not leaving this room until you understand it all. Just know if you decide to run, I will be right behind you, and I won’t stop until I have you back.”

Rose swayed on her feet. Warren grabbed her before she hit the floor. His heart stopped, and a cold sweat dotted his forehead. Clutching her close to his chest, Warren sat on the bed with her on his lap. His heart began to beat again when he felt her strong, steady pulse under his fingers.

He pulled his phone out and sent a text. Reluctantly, Warren laid Rose on the bed. Looking her over, he couldn’t see anything visibly wrong with her. A soft knock on the door interrupted his assessment.

“What happened?” Vulture demanded, carrying his med bag.

“Swayed once and passed out.”

“She hit the floor?”

“Nope.”

Warren bit back anything he wanted to say as Vulture ran his hands over Rose, checking every inch of her for an injury she was hiding.

“She is sleeping,” he announced. “Let her. She hasn’t since she got here. Her body overrode her will.”

“Fuck me.”

“You are fucked. For some reason, that woman loves the hell out of you. But you messed up so bad she refused to call you to help her brother. She said her name wasn’t on the bank account, and your wife didn’t have any cash. What the hell? Is that how you treated her? It is a miracle she stayed with you that long. If you were in the same room, I would have beat your ass.”

“I can fix it,” Warren shouted, stepping toe to toe with Vulture.

“You can try,” he said, not backing down.

“Are you two done?” Brooks casually asked from the hallway. “Another warehouse was just hit.”

“I’m staying here,” Warren said without taking his eyes off Vulture. “Rose is going to make a run for it.”

“Roach is happy to watch over her,” Brooks shrugged.

“Not you too. I’m going to tell her.”

“If not, I hear there is a waiting list once her heart has mended.”

Warren glared at both of them as they walked out the door. Vulture closed the door gently and locked it behind him. Warren waited until the clubhouse was quiet before he kicked off his shoes and crawled into bed with her. Anxiety like he had never felt before filled him when she didn’t immediately reach for him.

Was he too late?

No. It wasn’t possible. He would make her fall in love with him all over again if he had to. As soon as she was awake and checked out again, he would come clean. Right now, he would stand guard over the woman who ruled his heart. He would protect her and make sure no one hurt her, even him.
