“And I am.” I folded my arms in front of my chest. “But I won’t tolerate this blatant disrespect. Lower your damn weapon. Now.”

He sighed, then listened. Just like I thought, he wasn’t a complete moron.

“Let me be frank, Miss Kaya,” he said, his demeanor stoic. “I’ve always admired your strength. Truthfully, if I’d been through half of what you’ve gone through—as a child nonetheless—I’d go ballistic. You, however, remained classy and strong. That’s the only reason we want to recruit you.”

A laugh slipped.

Then, all hell broke loose.

Gunshots from downstairs, screams of agony, and yelling could be heard. Shattering of the windows and loud thuds filled my ears. I wasn’t panicking, though the situation didn’t make me thrilled, either.

All the fun was downstairs, yet there I was, stuck with Danila’s deranged self, trying not to get myself killed before my time.

“As good as it feels to be complimented, I’d rather die than ever work for my father.”

Danila sighed in disappointment. “I thought you might say that, which is why I’m prepared to give you anything you wish for.”

I glanced to the left. We were near the window, and the fall would end with a few broken bones if I was lucky. I wouldn’t die, as there were bushes to soften the blow, but I wouldn’t be left unscathed.

“You can jump, but I’d advise against that.” Danila stepped closer.

I turned around and opened the window, preparing it just in case. Wind blew in my face, and a sense of calm washed over me. I no longer felt uneasy around Danila, and I already had the gist of what his plan was.

“Don’t you worry about me. I’m not suicidal,” I commented. “And I’ll have to reject that offer. There’s nothing I want more than to see Bogdan suffering before his death.”

“What a shame.” His response was immediate, as if he’d anticipated this. “I told him you wouldn’t agree to any terms and that the best plan was to take you out completely.”

“It’s a surprise he would even want me to join his… operations, given that he made my life a living hell.”

“I don’t agree with the things he’s done to you. They were too extreme. But it did end up shaping you into a perfect, lifeless, soulless soldier.”

My heart fluttered, and a grin spread across my face. “You mean it? I’m flattered.”

“Well then, I’ll have to disappoint you.” Danila smiled. The motherfucker had the audacity to smile. “Bogdan isn’t here tonight.”

“In other words,” I said with a bitter laugh, “he doesn’t think I’m worthy enough to deal with me personally, so he sent you.”

That completely ruined my plans.

All I could feel was years’ worth of rage that finally came to the surface. My body trembled from anger, and it was an emotion I could not control. It was supposed to end tonight. I was supposed to take his life, then move on with mine.

Bogdan’s face flashed in my mind. That obnoxious laughter, the mockery on his face—all of it made me too angry to even think of anything else. That motherfucker was supposed to be here tonight, yet he’d managed to outsmart me.

I tried thinking of my next move, but he didn’t let me.

Danila was before me in the blink of an eye. He tried flashing me an apologetic smile, but his eyes told a different story. Nothing but annoyance was behind that gaze, along with a hint of hatred. Then, when I least expected it, he struck me.

The blade cut through my flesh as he forced it deeper into my skin. I gritted my teeth in sudden pain, closing my eyes. As if to taunt me, he twisted the knife twice before removing it. Somehow, pulling the knife out was far more painful than when he stabbed me.

He hit the lower-left side of my stomach. He missed my kidney, thankfully, but he didn’t miss the nerves.

“Sleep tight, Miss Kaya.” He inched closer to my ear. “If you survive this, let’s meet again.”

He was out of my sight just as quickly.

I rolled up my already blood-stained shirt and inspected the wound. The bleeding wasn’t as excessive as I’d expected, which gave me enough time to finish this tonight. However, it wouldn’t be too long before I bled to death unless I got some medical attention.

With my palm, I pressed on the injury, trying to stop the bleeding. Chills consumed my body, but I needed to move. I needed to find Adrik to let him know that it was Danila who’d betrayed my brothers.
