I regretted not wearing my earpiece right about now. Another way the universe was fucking with me. It was laughable.

Suddenly, as if someone above was mocking me, things became worse.

One of the bombs went off, but it wasn’t the one in the attic. Something happened downstairs that forced Adrik’s hand to detonate it. He might be violent, but he didn’t like bombs. He preferred killing people by hand. It gave him the most dopamine.

The building started shaking, crumbling. The damage of a single bomb wasn’t too great, but it wouldn’t withstand another one or more. I needed to get away before I got blown to pieces.

I rushed downstairs, clutching my wound and praying that no one would see it.

As soon as I was on the second floor, where Danila and I were originally hiding, I started choking. Smoke filled the room and where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

“Adrik!” I screamed out.

I couldn’t hear anyone speaking. I couldn’t see anything.

Not a single person was within my line of sight. The smoke had clouded around me, creating a cage. I was trapped, with no sense of direction.

Footsteps came from my right side and, before I could register it, I was lying on the ground. I’d hit my head against the tiles, an ache spreading through my body. A loud hiss came from me, and the man on top of me had his hands wrapped around my throat.

He wasn’t in a great state, just like me. The only advantage I had was that the gun was still in my hand, and I didn’t hesitate before blowing his brains out. He fell on top of me, the weight of his body making me struggle to breathe.

It took me a solid minute to get him off of me and stand up. Even then, I struggled to walk.

No.

It couldn’t end like this.

Adrik had to know.

I had to find him.

He had to know.

All I could see within the smoke was the fire that was spreading incredibly fast. By the time I reached the closest window and smashed it open, I’d lost all of my strength. The only hope I had was when my watch lit up and a small message popped up.

I turned to the window and took a deep breath.

Glancing down, through my blurry vision, I saw bodies upon bodies scattered around. From the distance, I couldn’t distinguish between enemies or friends, but it was evident that both sides were at a loss tonight.

I couldn’t hold on anymore. The pain was no longer there, and that wasn’t good.

“Ekaterina!”

The moment his voice reached my ears, time stopped. All I could feel was my heart fluttering and a smile tugging on the corner of my mouth. He was here. My love came for me. But he would have to leave without me.

He was in front of me quickly, his hands cupping my face. Worry laced his face, eyes almost teary.

“Are you injured? We have to leave now. The other bombs will go off in less than three minutes.”

I was hot. Half of it was from the fire, the other half from the fever.

“No, I’m fine.”

He saw right through my lie, then touched my forehead. “Shit, you’re burning up. Let’s go. Now.”

He tried to pick me up bridal-style but with all the strength I had left in my body, I pushed him away.

Adrik was shocked and immediately stepped back.
