They were inside.

The noise was faint, almost nonexistent. At this point, they were most likely scouting for anything out of place, but they were not going to find anything. Aleksei’s men were hidden well, and, although this was their turf, we had the upper hand.

A few of our men stepped forward. I was amazed at how silent their walking was. How they managed to remain completely quiet. It seemed like they were levitating a few millimeters off the floor.

Danila slightly repositioned himself to have a better view of the path Aleksei’s men were headed towards, and that was the opportunity I needed.

I could no longer wait for instructions or listen to Danila. My heart almost burst with excitement. Given that I knew how to be silent, I squeezed myself between Danila and the shelf and followed the troop in front of me.

I could feel the stare of disapproval boring into my back, but I merely shook it off. Sorry, Danila. Playing hide and seek for the entire night might’ve been your plan, but it wasn’t mine.

We approached the stairs quickly. A wave of adrenaline rushed through my veins, making me feel all giddy and warm on the inside. Nothing could wipe the smile off my face. My eyes closed for a brief moment, mentally preparing myself.

The men scattered around, following instructions and blatantly ignoring me.

Good.

That’s exactly what I wanted.

I stepped onto the first stair and sat down, head pressed against the railings. I closed my eyes to completely focus on hearing what they were talking about. Even then, it was difficult.

This part of the building had no lighting, but the stairs did. If I stepped down another step, they’d see my shadow, and we’d be discovered.

All I could hear them talking about was getting something and then grabbing someone.

I opened my eyes.

They had a target?

That meant that they either knew Belushi had opened his mouth, or they sent him knowing that it wouldn’t take him too long to crack under pressure. I feared the latter option, because then we’d fallen right into their trap, and there was no way out.

Minutes passed, and they continued rambling. Their voices were loud and way too fast for me to understand who they’d been planning to capture. I prayed it wasn’t me, but it could’ve been just about anyone.

Then, all of a sudden, I felt something sharp pressed against my back.

“If you want to live, remain silent and walk upstairs.”

The voice made the blood in my veins freeze.

I’d forgotten that there was a possible mole, and the excitement from the situation had made me lower my guard. It was entirely my fault, and I was pissed that I hadn’t stayed with Davorin. I hoped that he was somewhere close.

Listening, I got off my ass and silently walked up the stairs.

From everyone else’s perspective, it looked like we were walking together. Motherfucker had positioned his knife in a way that no one could see it, but I definitely felt it pressed against my back. The blade was sharp; one wrong move, and it would pierce through my skin.

Dread filled me as we entered the attic. My eyes scanned the large room for the bombs, but I couldn’t see any. My hand clutched the gun in my hand. As soon as I could, I’d turn around and shoot him right in between his eyes.

We were all alone. At this point, I couldn’t hear anyone downstairs, and it made the situation really terrible for me. Turning around would end with me dying by his hand before I even had the chance to pull the trigger.

“What do you want from me?” I asked, voice flat with a hint of annoyance.

“I’m here to offer you a deal, Miss Kaya.”

Then, he was the one to step around me until we were face to face. He was quick to pull a gun with one hand, whilst the other one kept a tight grip on the handle of the knife.

“I’m not interested in deals offered by traitors, Danila.”

He tilted his head to the side, feigning hurt. “I’m very disappointed to hear that. I thought you were an open-minded woman.”
