Jesse stops and looks back at me, and then, instead of pursuing the guy, he jogs over to me.
He grabs hold of my arms, thumbs pressing into my flesh. “Are you good?”
I open my mouth, but the words won’t come.He’s got a knife.The thought repeats.
Jesse’s brows are slashes above those deep blue eyes, and he guides me back through the kitchen, reaching for his phone.
“I’m calling it in.”
“I—”
“I am calling this the fuck in.”
His words are furious. He walks me into the diner and sits me down on a chair, and I let him.
I let him because I can’t think straight. A man with a knife. First the window, now this?
Jesse talks on the phone nearby, pacing back and forth, his broad shoulders stiff. I’ve never seen himangry.Annoyed, yeah. Irritated, sure. But never downright angry. His body vibrates with tension, and he brushes his fingers through his short, dark hair, clenching his jaw so that it pops.
I stare at the kitchen door, holding the pepper spray like it’s my anchor to reality.
Jesse comes over to me. “They’re on the way.”
“You shouldn’t have?—”
“Fuck.” Jesse drops down in front of me. “Fuck that. Fuck. That. You could’ve been killed.”
I glance at the front door and gasp. The glass is shattered.
“I kicked it in,” Jesse says, following my line of sight. “I’ll replace it for you.”
I don’t have words.
“Who did this? Who was that? Tell me who it was. Tell me, Marci. Who’s responsible? I’ll break his fucking legs. I’ll breakevery finger on both his hands so he can never hold a fucking toothbrush again, let alone a knife.”
My eyelashes flutter. “Taylor, I?—”
“Who?”
I shrug.
Billy won’t tell me his real name. He calls him Jonesy. I’ve never met anyone in Heatstroke with that name.
“But he’s threatening you, yeah? Why?”
“Money. He wants money.”
“Why?”
I hesitate.
“Tell me.”
“Billy borrowed money from a guy. He keeps calling him Jonesy, but I don’t think that’s his real name. I’m the one on the hook,” I say.
Jesse rears back. “That fucking brother?—”
“Don’t.”
