Ty stares back at me, blank faced and waiting, as I draw this out as long as I can.

“Hm…” I hum again.

“Just ask a fucking question,” he snaps.

I smile at him with a chuckle. “Ok. What’s your favorite color?”

Ty looks back at me incredulously. “That’s your question?”

“Ah,” I hold up a finger, “no questions, only answers. And you have to be honest. No lying, Ty. This is serious business.”

Ty sighs for the hundredth time in the past hour, I swear, and shrugs. “Uh… red, I guess.”

I nod seriously. “Yeah, I can see that. That fits.”

He doesn’t respond, instead dropping his eyes to the board and capturing my pawn in the next move.

Which I totally saw coming…

He keeps his eyes cast down as he chews his bottom lip for a moment. The anticipation builds within me as I observe him, waiting to hear what he wants to know.

“You’re bi?” he asks, still looking down.

“I am.” I nod, my heart now thrashing in my chest. The fact that that was his first question has me all kinds of excited.

Ty nods thoughtfully, and I reach out to make my next move. Because I know what my next question is.

After a couple moves between us, I capture another one of his pawns. I briefly think about easing into it, but nah. The color thing was a solid start, plus he’s the one that brought us into sexual territory in the first place.

“Are you?” I ask.

He finally looks up at me and gives a slight shake of his head, his expression somewhat thoughtful. “Never thought I was.”

I can read between those lines. He’s bi for me. I’ve awakened him. And I feel damn good about that.

I smile at him. “Gotcha.”

His eyes briefly drop to my smile, then down to the board again to make his move.

But on my next turn, I make another epic capture. Of a pawn, but still. Epic, because I’m going for it. It’s time to get to the real stuff. The stuff I’ve always wanted to know about Ty.

“Why don’t you celebrate your wins?”

His eyes shoot up to meet mine. And I see a wall slam up behind them.

Well, shit.

Who would have thought that he’d be more open about his apparent bi-awakening than this…

“You have to answer,” I say slowly, and more carefully than I intended.

He blinks and looks out into the room. “Because there’s no point in celebrating every step along the way. It’s not the end, and when I get to the end, I’ll celebrate.”

I nod. “Rather than take a moment to appreciate the step you just achieved. Got it, sounds healthy.”

He looks at me again. “The end goal is what matters to me. I just don’t see a reason to celebrate every fight I win to get there.”

“And when people try to celebrate you?” I ask, taking a drink of my beer.
