Damn her and her wisdom.

I scoff again and roll my head back. “Yeah, fine, there’s a guy. But that’s all I’m telling you. It’s literally nothing, and after I bake my feels out, I’ll be fine.”

“Ok,” Mia says cheerily, happy she got me to, somewhat, admit to her what’s going on. “You always win them over, anyway. Bring him a muffin, I’m sure he’ll love it.”

“Hm.” I briefly picture Ty eating a muffin and I’m not sure why that turns me on. “Well, I’m also making cinnamon rolls, which is much more representative of me, so I’d rather see him eat that…” I chuckle at my own wittiness, but then sigh because of all the drama from tonight.

Would he ever eat my cinnamon roll…?

“Damn, he’s really in your head, isn’t he?”

“No,” I snap. Then sigh again. “Maybe. But, no, I said we weren’t talking about this.” I shoot the phone a scathing glare so hard I bet she can feel it. “Topic change, tell me about work.”

Mia chuckles. “Same as always. Crazy. Been working a lot of night shifts as one of the other ER doctors is on leave so, lucky me, I have the wonderful opportunity to pick up more time.”

“That sucks,” I mutter as I sprinkle cinnamon sugar over the dough for my cinnamon rolls.

“Tell me about it. Nadia is jealous,” Mia chuckles. “She thinks it sounds fun.”

I snort out a laugh. “She’s delusional.”

“Nah, she’s driven, just like the rest of the family. She’s rocking pre-med. I think our little sister may actually show us all up, Mom and Dad included.”

“Won’t take much to show me up,” I mumble, and immediately want to take that back.

“Luca,” Mia says in a sympathetic tone, and I wince.

“It’s fine.” I shrug to myself as I roll up my cinnamon rolls. “I like what I do, and I’ve accepted that being a gym teacher and putting too much time into my hobbies is disappointing. And if that’s what it takes to be a disappointment, then I am a-ok with that.”

“Luca,” Mia says again, but this time it’s scolding. “Mom and Dad are not disappointed in you.”

“Yeah?” I laugh. “I’m the only member of the family who’s not a doctor or working towards being one, and I think the phrase Dad used when I told them I was moving out here was… potentially throwing my life away by chasing a hobby.” I nod. “Yeah, that’s the one.”

Well, shit. Now I feel even worse about myself.

I think I’ll make banana bread too.

“He’s just a hardass. You know he just wants what’s best for you. In his own, albeit wrong, way, he’s just trying to make sure you’ll be ok.”

“This is what’s best for me.”

“I know. And I agree. We all love seeing you do the things that make you happy. You’re a kickass teacher, and even if we don’t really understand the whole MMA thing,” she chuckles, “you’re damn good at it and I’m so proud of you for not following in their footsteps and doing something you knew you wouldn’t love.” She pauses for a moment with a light laugh. “I can’t picture you being a doctor anyway.”

I shudder. “Yeah, me either.” I set my knife down after slicing up my cinnamon rolls. “Thanks, Mia.”

“Anytime, bud. So…”

“No.”

“Please?”

“I told you, I’m not talking about it.” I point the knife dramatically at the phone. “I’m holding a knife you know.”

“Ok, ok,” she laughs. “Well, it’s getting late, I should go. I finally have a night off and I need some fucking sleep. Don’t bake too late…”

“I won’t,” I say as I pull out the bananas to start mashing them up for banana bread.

“Sure,” she says, and I can practically hear the eye roll. “Night, Luca. Talk again soon, ok?”
