And the flutters just keep coming.

Well, fuck me.

FOURTEEN

This is exactly what I was trying to avoid. I don’t want to be alone with him. I just want to continue training separately and pretend like he doesn’t exist.

But when he asked me to roll tonight, I couldn’t ignore the little voice in my head yelling at me to say yes. Because he was right about one thing. He does get under my skin, more than anyone else ever has. And why that is, I don’t know. Or maybe I do, and I’m just not ready to admit it yet.

I don’t ever feel like this around anyone. Especially a guy. And especially him.

I keep his gaze as we stand on opposite sides of the quiet, empty gym, just looking at each other. Waiting for one of us to make the first move.

And what move is that?

I blow out a forceful breath, dropping my eyes from his and running a hand through my hair. “Let’s get this over with.”

“Again, with the excitement,” he says. “Reel it in already, would you?”

I meet him on the mats and feel that anxious energy take over me again. The anticipation, the unease, the wonder… and I hate that. This is my area of expertise over him. I dominate him in grappling, and now I’m on edge facing him. Even though we’re probably just drilling again.

He strips off his shirt and turns to toss it on the bench behind him. My eyes immediately land on the fucking unicorn tattoo.

“What’s with the unicorn?” I ask, as I take my shirt off as well and toss it on another bench.

When I turn back to him, he quickly raises his eyes from my abs and clears his throat. “What do you mean?”

“I mean,” I say pointedly, as if he doesn’t fucking know, “why do you have a unicorn tattoo on your back?”

Luca just shrugs. “Why not?”

“Seriously? Just, why not?”

He sighs as he shrugs one shoulder again. “My little sister really liked unicorns when she was younger, so I got a unicorn. I wanted to get something for her, it made sense.” He rolls his eyes and shakes his head.

My eyes fall to his ribs, landing on the moon tattoo. “And the moon?” I ask, before I can stop myself. Why do I care?

He glances down at the tattoo. “Just for fun.”

He smiles and I sigh. Right, nothing has a meaning or purpose for him.

I don’t even know why I asked.

There’s an awkward beat of silence while we stand before each other on the mats, and I try not to let my eyes roam over more of his weird tattoos.

“Ok, so… what do you want to work-” I start, but he steps forward.

“Let’s just go.”

“What?”

“Let’s roll.” He gestures to the mat. “Let’s not go all Ty and break this down, just do it.”

The tension settles in my muscles as, once again, he has no plan. He’s just winging it and wasting my fucking time.

“You asked me to train with you tonight.” I stare back at him, seething. “And you don’t even have anything you want to work on?”

“No.” He shrugs and shakes his head. “Come on, Ty. We don’t have to plan. I just want to roll, that’s it.” He tilts his head with a playful smirk. “Can you do that?”
