Be on time tomorrow.

I huff an amused laugh. Such a drill sergeant.

Bye Ty. Have fun with the stars.

I know he won’t respond to that, so I lock my phone and set it on the bed beside me. But I don’t bring my attention back to the TV, and instead stare at the ceiling.

Fuck.

I think I have a crush on my enemy.

TWELVE

I grip my steering wheel tighter as I get closer to the gym. It’s 7:40 am, and I’m already pissed because I know Luca won’t be there on time. He was smug enough yesterday when he rolled in twenty minutes late, what’s another thirty today?

But who cares. Like I told him, I would be here anyway.

I don’t care if he even shows.

But the tightness in my chest at that thought tells me I’m a liar.

The gym appears before me as I turn onto the street, and I’m surprised to see a red Jeep in the parking lot. I didn’t think anyone else was going to be here this morning. But I’m even more surprised by the slight feeling of annoyance that we won’t have the gym to ourselves. But I quickly shake that feeling off. I can still kick Luca’s ass regardless of who’s around.

As I walk past the Jeep after parking my car, I take in the purple flower hanging from the rear-view mirror and the random stickers all over the rear door. I slow my pace as my eyes land on a unicorn sticker, then slide to the door of the gym.

No way.

The door is unlocked, and as I push it open, I’m met with a view of Luca standing in the middle of the gym with his arms crossed and a huge, smug smile.

“You’re late,” he says.

All I can do is glare at him.

“What?” he asks, far too innocently.

“You’re early.”

He glances at the clock on the wall, like he doesn’t fucking know, and shrugs. “You told me to be on time. You know Ty, if you’re not early, you’re late. I feel like that’s a rule you would live by.”

I sigh, adjust my bag on my shoulder and walk past him towards the locker room.

Don’t kill him, don’t kill him…

“But also…” Luca says, and I stop.

Reluctantly, I turn to face him. He is standing in the same spot, but has dropped his arms and his smile.

He sighs and steps towards me. “I was late yesterday because I thought you wouldn’t show. If I was late… I saved face.” He shrugs with a sheepish expression.

We’re both silent for a moment, as I take this in. And his vulnerability urges me to be honest too. “I thought you wouldn’t show either.”

His eyebrows raise slightly and a small smile tugs at the corner of his lips.

“But I was still on time,” I say. “So, you’re still an asshole.”

A smile spreads across his face with a light laugh and another shrug. “Well, yeah.”

I roll my eyes and turn around, continuing my trek to the locker room.
