“Don’t tell her who we are!” Axel snaps.

I drag my eyes away from Candy to stare at him. He’s being ridiculous right now. I raise my eyes heavenwards at his order and then shake my head. Can’t he see that she’s the victim here?

“Shut up, Axel Abbot,” I snap, deliberately using his full name to piss him off, before grinning at the girl. We need her to trust us and after what she’s been though, being locked up down here, she’s not going to trust us easily. “I’m Odile Kemp, and now you know our names so you can tell the cops if you need to.”

Axel growls in frustration, but I ignore him. He didn’t want me to come on this missionin my condition.I told himhiscondition waslucky to still be breathingand he quickly relented. He’s not happy about it though.

“Some friends of yours are looking for you, we just found you first, but we’re going to get you back to them right away, okay?” I say softly, turning my attention back to Candy. She nods and opens the water I gave her, taking long gulps. “Can you stand?”

She shakes her head. I’m not surprised, she looks weak.

“Here, hold on to me,” I offer, holding out my hand but Axel jumps in.

“Keep your hands off my?—”

“Off your nothing!” I snap back. “Finish that statement and I’ll staple your lips to Kaiden’s ball sack. Do not fuck with me on this, Axel. I’m deadly serious.”

“She could hurt you and?—”

“Again, with the silence. You are the worst. Honestly. Does she look like she can hurt a fly?” I shake my head, exasperated by his antics. I know that it comes from a place of love, but it’s honestly doing my head in, and I know that this is just the beginning. He’s going to get even worse as the months go on.

“She might be faking,” he points out, sounding pissed off and righteous at the same time. It makes me grit my teeth, and Imentally count to three before responding.Candy does not need to witness a domestic right now.

“Yes because that’s what girls who have been locked up and starved do,” I reply with heavy sarcasm. “Fake it so they can hurt their rescuers. For fuck’s sake, Abbott… Sorry about him. He really is an arsehole.”

“W-what day is it?” Candy croaks.

Just then, the body that I assumed was dead, rolls over and grabs Candy. We’d been warned about him, but still, I don’t expect Axel to shoot the guy. The gunshot rings out and blood splatters onto Candy’s face, making her scream. The guy falls back, dead.

Jesus Christ. That’s not going to help her stress levels or encourage her to trust us.

Right. Time to get out of here.

I help Candy to stand and keep an arm wrapped around her waist, holding her close to support her.

“Axel!” I hiss.

“What? We’re running out of time!” he retorts.

“Is h-he…” Candy whispers, still staring at the body.

“Dead? Yeah, sorry babe,” I reply, trying to sound apologetic. “The trigger-happy dickhead over there was supposed to wait until you left the room.”

“Fuck’s sake!” Axel snaps, striding into the room and grabbing Candy roughly, making her whimper. “We don’t have time for this.”

“Axel, give her to me!” I yell.

“No. I’m not fucking arguing with you about this. You’re not carrying her. Let’s go!” he shouts, making Candy flinch. Fucking hell, can’t he see she’s scared shitless?

I rush over and hug her tightly, whispering in her ear, “Everything is going to be okay.”

I step back after a brief hug and proceed to lead the way out of the cell she’s been kept in. Axel growls in annoyance at me taking the lead, but I ignore him. If he’s insisting on carrying Candy – which is probably for the best as she looks about ready to pass out – then it makes sense that I go up front and look for danger. It’s not like I’m unprotected, and Kaiden and Zie are up there, so I’m not walking into an ambush either.

It takes a few minutes to get out to the waiting car, and I climb into the back ahead of them so that when Axel places Candy on the backseat, her head is in my lap. She’s passed out but breathing, and Axel gives Zie orders to head to the hospital. I’m sure she’s severely dehydrated but hopefully that’s all there is to worry about. The doctors will check her over to be safe.

It’s not until we’ve handed her over at the hospital and been thanked way more times than is necessary by her guys for saving her that Axel turns to me with fire burning in his eyes.

“You,” he growls.
