‘Alex is not far behind me.’

He grunted a mirthless chuckle. ‘Don’t know what you’re expecting a dead man to do for you.’

‘What?’ She could barely speak as her lungs deflated in fear. ‘He can’t be—’

Her words were cut short as he reached for his belt with the hand not holding the gun. Sarah sunk further against the machine. She felt dangerously close to losing control of her bladder. The man towered over her.

Alex wasn’t coming this time. He had no idea where Sarah was, and she didn’t even know if he was alive.

And now she was staring into the barrel of a gun while a man stood over her, unbuckling his belt.

ChapterThirty-Two

‘Go,’ he mouthed to Sarah.

Alex watched her sprint back the way they’d come. The gun exploded behind him, the bullet ricocheting off the side of the building so close that grey powder sprayed across his hair and shoulder. He took cover beside the building, drawing his gun. Footsteps pounded. The shooter thought he’d run. Deep breath. He stepped out just as his attacker rounded the corner, slamming him hard against the sandstone wall and ramming his gun under the jaw.

‘Drop the fuckin’ gun, Brodie.’

Both men breathed angry air as they eyed each other. The gun bounced and clattered as it hit the pavement.

‘Why’d you come back here?’

‘Eye for an eye, brah.’

‘Since when is Zep so sentimental?’

‘He’s not. But Jesse… I told you, man. That guy’s out of control. He wants you dead. Talked Zep into it.’ Brodie’s breath came in gasps as Alex’s gun remained pressed against his windpipe.

‘Who’s in the apartment?’

‘Jesse. A hired gun.’

‘Where’s the fourth?’

‘What?’

‘I know there’s four of you.’

‘Chasing down your girl, I’d say.’

Alex heaved Brodie off the wall, repositioning the gun against the back of his neck. He twisted Brodie’s arm behind his back, the one he hadn’t broken, and shoved him forward. Pausing briefly to swoop up the gun from the pavement.

‘Time to reacquaint myself with Jesse.’

‘Ain’t ya worried about your girl.’ Brodie grunted, failing to mask the pain of his wrenched arm.

‘She can handle herself.’ Right now, he had to believe that was true. Especially as he had to take the opportunity to end this once and for all with The Devils.

The front door of the apartment stood open. Alex pushed Brodie forward, his back against the wall using his captive as a shield as he made his way up the stairs. He was confident Jesse would have seen their approach, so he called out.

‘Where you hiding, Jesse?’

A shadow emerged from the living room door. ‘Alex Riley, as I live and breathe. Traitor and all-round prick.’

Jesse stood with his hands on his hips, trying to fill the space. He was five foot six and on the verge of stocky. His shaved head was covered in tattoos, as were most parts of his body under his jeans and leather jacket. The ‘enforcer’ patch was bright and new compared to the grime on the rest of his patches.

‘Where’s your bodyguard?’
