“What’s going on here?” Mom asks, walking out of the kitchen with Charlotte who’s holding a wedding magazine.

“I just caught our daughter in bed with Luc Le Blanche.”

Mom’s mouth drops and Charlotte’s eyes bulge. Since the other night we’ve grown closer so she looks sad for me.

“Is this true, Autumn?” Mom asks.

“Yes, it’s true,” Dad cuts in. “She’s been lying to everyone for God knows how long and sneaking around with that monster who battered Evan to a pulp for no damn reason.”

That’s it. I’ve had enough of his delusions of Evan. Since I’m already spinning around in the eye of this shitstorm I’ll give him a rude awakening.

“Evan is the one who’s a monster, Dad!” I shout. “He tried to rape me the other night. If Luc did anything to him, it’s because of that.” I say it like that because I don’t want to drag Luc into this and I don’t want him to be the focus.

Dad goes pale but shakes his head in disbelief. “What are you talking about?”

“You heard me.”

“Evan would never do that to you.”

It hurts that I was right. Dad doesn’t believe me.

“But he did,” Charlotte speaks up, stepping forward and standing at my side. “I stopped him and threw him out. He was waiting for Autumn in her room when she came home. I caught him with his hands around her neck.”

“Oh Jesus,” Mom gasps, bringing her hands up to her cheeks. Her eyes fill with tears as she looks at me. “Autumn.”

“He was strangling her and he tore off her clothes. Autumn couldn’t even breathe and you should have seen the bruises on her neck. Haven’t you noticed the scarf she was wearing until yesterday?” Charlotte continues. “I got there just in time to stop him. If Luc really did beat the shit out of him he absolutely deserved it.”

I never thought I’d live to see the day when Charlotte stood by my side to stand up for me. And to our father? I’m utterly speechless.

“Oh my God.” Mom rushes to my other side and puts an arm around me and looks at Dad. “Shawn, this has gotten out of hand.”

Dad balls his hand into a fist and blows out a ragged breath, then he glances at me and places a hand to his head. “I can’t talk about this anymore. This is a nightmare. An absolute fucking nightmare.”

He walks away, continuing down the corridor as I watch him.

When he enters the study and closes the door I look back at Charlotte who is already staring at me.

“Thank you,” I mumble.

“It’s okay.”

“Sweetheart.” Mom turns me to face her and sets her hands on my shoulders. “Are you okay?”

“No.”

I suppose Dad and I can agree on one thing.

Thisisa nightmare.

Mine.

Chapter 32

Luc

Ilean over the pool table in my games room to take my shot.

Hunter watches me keenly, knowing I'm at the end of my line. He's been here since this morning offering his support and a listening ear. I called him last night and told him what happened.
