“What are you doing here?”

I shrugged self-consciously and waved my hands at my side. “Surprise!”

He leaned down, rounded his hand behind my neck, and placed a kiss right on my lips, not caring that we had company. “The best kind.”

Then he squatted to hug his daughter, who was too overwhelmed getting love from herPapi, best friend, and furry companion.

“She missed you,” I explained our presence lamely.

“Just her?”

His friends watched with unrestrained attention, but I loved that they were so supportive of us. “I might’ve missed you, too,” I admitted softly.

He was leaning down to kiss me again when a phone rang in the distance, making him groan. “Damn it. That’s mine.” He looked back at his office, then at me. “Don’t move.”

“It must be the client again.” Ben turned on his heels and called over his shoulder. “The lover boy will come back in a minute, Lisa.”

“They’re both dealing with one of our clients, and the guy is getting cold feet,” Mia explained. “Make yourself comfortable. He’ll be here in a minute.”

Gabe took Fee’s hand. “We’re going to play in the room with Hugo.”

Haley nodded at them. “Call if you need anything, honey.”

Even though we weren’t that close, since they were a bit older than me, Haley and Mia made me feel at home and included me in their conversation. They were easy to talk to, and once again I felt accepted by those people who were so important to Danny.

We were lost in a series of different topics when someone else joined us and put a damper on our relaxing moment.

“This feels like the beginning of a joke. The murderer, the widow, and the nanny.”

I couldn’t help tensing at Andrea’s shrill voice and vicious words.

Mia leaned her elbow on the high reception desk, seemingly unbothered. “I’m sorry, we don’t have your one hundred and one Dalmatian puppies. You might need to make your coat out of other innocent creatures.” She greeted Andrea with her fakest smile. “Hello, Mrs. ...I can’t call you Delgado anymore. What should I call you? I have a few suggestions if you don’t mind.”

“Still spiteful, I see. I came here to talk to Daniel.”

Mia placed a hand on her chest in mock reverence. “Your daughter is fine, by the way. In case you’ve forgotten about her.”

Andrea threw daggers at Mia through her eyes. “I don’t need you to remind me about her.”

“Of course not. You have a court order for that,” Mia added sweetly, and I understood all too well her pleasure in antagonizing the woman.

Andrea huffed. “You’re such a waste of time.” She tried to march through the hallway, but Mia stepped in front of her. “Get out of my way.”

“This ismycompany. Unless you have an appointment, you’re not allowed inside. So, you can either leave and schedule a meeting with him, or you can wait here until he’s free and willing to talk to you.”

The woman was smart enough to back down, although still looking down at Mia. “Could you call him for me?” she asked through greeted teeth. “It’s important, and I have better things to do.”

Mia nodded in understanding. “Any new cartel members to bang? Or another marriage to screw over?”

Andrea crossed her arms and tried her best to ignore Danny’s friend. Realizing she wouldn’t win the round with Mia, Andrea turned her guns on me.

“Banged the daddy already? Or is he still hung up on me? The loser was a big lay, I’ll give you that. But a woman needs more than a big dick.”

I wasn’t a vicious person, but she was getting on my nerves. “You look different.” I pondered in thought. “Have you put on a little ego?”

Mia snorted, and I was happy to see even Haley was suppressing a smile. As high-schooly as it sounded, point for me.

Andrea was about to counter me, her venom dripping from her eyes when Mia intervened. “I’d watch my next words if I were you, Andrea. You’re already on thin ice, or have you forgotten the custody and divorce hearings? The last thing you want is to piss off Danny for yet another reason.”
