“As you should be,” Mikey murmured as she felt herself start to relax.

He really was comfy, she thought, which probably explained why she always slept better when she was in his arms. He-

Had her frowning when she felt him go still against her. Really hoping that it wasn’t what she thought it was, Mikey opened her eyes, only to find Sebastian staring at something behind her. Swallowing hard, Mikey followed his gaze and found her stepfather leaning back against the doorway, his massive arms folded over his chest, and the murderous glare that she had to admit was a bit concerning, focused on Sebastian.

“This probably isn’t going to end well,” Mikey had to admit, which was, of course, followed by a mumbled, “I’m really going to miss you,” to the boy who should probably be making a run for it.

“Something tells me that you’ll get over it,” Sebastian said, swallowing hard as he slowly pulled his arm away, careful not to make any sudden movements and risk startling her stepfather.

Nodding, Mikey said, “You’re probably right,” as she cleared her throat and then pasted a hopeful smile on her face as she returned her attention to her stepfather to find that small muscle in his jaw ticking, which, again, probably wasn’t a good sign. “Have I told you how much I love you, Daddy?”

When Reese only continued glaring, Mikey followed that up by nodding solemnly as she added, “Because it really should be said.”

There was a heavy sigh, and then, Sebastian was climbing off the bed and-

“This would probably be a good time to mention that he’s been a bad influence on me,” Mikey said, deciding to take a different tactic when her stepfather’s murderous gaze flickered to her before following the move.

“You’re evil,” Sebastian bit out.

Mikey nodded in agreement, “Because you’ve made me that way.”

“I’m going to throttle you,” Sebastian said, which, given the circumstances, was understandable.

Ignoring him, she focused on Reese. “I didn’t want to say anything,” Mikey said, only to pause long enough for effect before continuing, “but that boy,” and this is where she paused so that she could point a damning finger at Sebastian, “tried to talk me into ripping the tags off the mattress, but don’t worry, I’m a good girl and refused to do something that I knew would upset you.”

When her stepfather only continued glaring, Mikey added, “He also took the Lord’s name in vain?”

“If I survive, I’m going to kill you,” Sebastian promised, once again drawing Reese’s attention.

“Did I mention that he was trying to involve me in his plans for world domination?” Mikey asked, blinking innocently as she watched her stepfather slowly nod before he pushed away from the door and-

Decided that this would probably be a good time to stop talking and make a run for it.

CHAPTER3

“Wait! I had nothing to do with this!” came the panicked announcement that had Sebastian opening his eyes in time to watch as his brother was tossed onto the end of his bed and-

Oh, God, no…

“Big day,” their mother murmured, drawing Sebastian’s attention to find her sitting in his desk chair, nodding absently as she cleared her throat, shifted, went to open her mouth again only to close it, shift again, clear her throat, and finally, she tried for a warm smile that actually terrified him.

That was followed by Sebastian shifting his gaze to his father to find him standing there, looking resigned before he shifted his attention back to Jonathan to find his brother openly panicking as he moved to climb off the bed and make a run for it, but there was no way in hell that he was going through this alone.

“Let go!” Jonathan bit out as he frantically tried to break free from Sebastian’s hold before it was too late and-

“I was thinking,” their mother began, making him swallow hard.

“We don’t need to do this,” Sebastian said hollowly as he watched his mother’s expression turn determined.

“You’re both at that age where you’re going to start noticing girls,” their mother began, carefully choosing her words as Sebastian sat there, telling himself that this wasn’t happening, only to frown when he saw the calculating look in his brother’s eye.

“And why would we do that, Mother?” Jonathan asked as he shoved Sebastian aside and sat up with a satisfied sigh.

She opened her mouth only to manage to get out a weakly mumbled, “Things?”

“I see,” Jonathan murmured with a solemn nod as he gestured for her to continue.

“Right,” their mother mumbled as she cleared her throat. “You’ll also notice that there are changes starting to happen in your own bodies,” she mumbled weakly as she gestured awkwardly towards them.
