I do my best to remain calm, but this is pretty exciting for me, and I can’t control the fidgeting.

“Really?” Bodhi chuckles.

“What?”

“You weren’t even this excited about meeting me,” he jokes, nodding toward my hands and their inability to hold still.

“Yeah, well, I’m pretty sure the excitement faded shortly after you wrecked my car,” I chide, and he just laughs again, nudging me with his elbow.

“Whatever. I’ll just have to think of other ways to excite you.”

I turn to look at him, and he waggles his eyebrows mischievously.

Part of me wants to ask him what exactly he has in mind, but I know that this isn’t the place to ask those questions. Especially when I’m not ready to hear the answers surrounded by thousands of people and Lacey-freaking-Breckenridge.

“Hey Breckenridge, that was some good driving out there today,” Bodhi calls out as we approach, and it shocks me how polite he’s being when normally he acts like she’s the enemy.

“Thanks Kane, you too,” she says, nodding in greeting.

“I brought a fan of yours over to say hi. Hope that’s all right.” He smiles genuinely, hooking his arm around my shoulders and rubbing his hand over my exposed arm, sending goosebumps down to my fingertips.

“Of course,” she says brightly, perking up in an instant. “Hi, I’m Lacey. It’s nice to meet you,” she says, stretching out her arm to shake my hand.

“Hi, I’m Keaton. You did so great out there today,” I say, practically gushing now.

“If only you’d gotten this excited for me,” Bodhi grumbles under his breath and I reach out to whack his chest with the back of my hand.

“Oh, stop, you know you did a good job. Quit fishing,” I scold.

“I like you,” Lacey nods approvingly, and I think I might just have a girl crush.

“Hey Alderson,” I hear Bodhi call out, and turn to see Lacey’s manager, Kyle Alderson, walk over with a pretty brunette at his side.

“What brings you over, Kane?” Kyle asks, smiling kindly at the both of us.

“Just introducing my… friend, Keaton, to Lacey. She’s a fan,” Bodhi explains and Kyle nods, a look of understanding dawns on him and I’m not exactly sure what the look that passes between him and Bodhi means.

“Hi, nice to meet you. I’m Kyle, and this is my wife, Cheyenne.” I shake both of their hands and then step back to Bodhi’s side.

“Hi, I was just congratulating Lacey on how well she drove today,” I say.

“Heck yeah, that’s the only way we race at Alderson Racing. Taught her everything I know,” Kyle says proudly, and I smile at the look on his wife’s face.

“Really? The only way you race?” Cheyenne cuts her eyes up toward him.

“What?” Kyle says, playfully defensive.

“What do you call what happened at the track Friday?” Cheyenne raises her eyebrows at her husband, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips.

“Hey,” Kyle points a finger toward her, “that was two wheels, not four. I was out of my comfort zone, so it doesn’t count.”

“Uh-huh, okay, babe. Whatever you say.” She hooks her arms through his and pats him on the chest affectionately.

I watch the two interact and feel a pang in my chest. I want the ease that those two seem to have. I want someone to banter with playfully, who understands me and my passions and will stand there by my side like that.

When I feel Bodhi’s hand slide across the small of my back, I wonder if maybe I’ve found that someone.

“Anyway, we better get back over there,” Bodhi gestures toward his crew, “but again, great job today, Lacey.”
