“Honestly?” I ask, raising my brows.

We stop just outside the front door, and he turns me to face him, a serious look in his eyes, waiting for my answer.

“There were days in the beginning when I hoped you wouldn’t follow through. I hoped you would just forget that I existed and go on with your own life. But you never did. You always manage to come through, and despite some of the secrets that we’ve both been guilty of keeping, you always hold to your word,” I say, taking his hand in mine and squeezing it.

He smiles down at me before reaching around the back of my neck and drawing me to him, kissing me slowly and sweetly.

Remembering where we are, I pull back just enough to look up at him.

“I never doubted you for a second.”

“Well, look who it is,” a familiar voice pulls us from the moment, and I turn to see Milo strutting toward the front door, smiling from ear to ear, crinkling the corners of his dark brown eyes. His long brown hair is pulled back in a bun, and his bronzed skin is flushed across his high cheeks.

“Hey Milo,” I say, offering him a lopsided grin.

He leans forward, pulling me into a side-hug, gently squeezing my shoulder.

“Glad to see you’re doing okay,” he says, and through the lighthearted tone of his voice, I can hear the sincerity.

I never really thought of Milo as anything more than an acquaintance for such a long time, but I admit that I like the thought of having another friend in my corner. If shit ever really went south, I feel like Milo is the kind of guy you can always count on.

“Is she here?” a younger female voice calls out from somewhere behind Milo.

Before he can step to the side, out of the way, small hands are shoving passed him, until the female version of Bodhi is standing toe to toe with me.

“Whoa,” I say under my breath, taking her in.

Her long brown hair is a touch warmer than Bodhi’s, her natural highlights reminding me of cinnamon in the afternoon sun. They have the same brilliant blue eyes, and after meeting Rob, I knew exactly where they got them from. They both share the same high cheekbones and straight nose, but hers is slightly more upturned than Bodhi’s. Standing in front of Milo, she looks like a pixie. The top of her head just barely hits his collar bone.

“Holy shit, Bo, she’s gorgeous,” she says, and I can’t help the laugh that bubbles up from my chest.

“You are too kind. I know how rough I look right now,” I say, trying my best not to feel too self-conscious about it.

“Oh bull, girl. It’s just some bruises. We can all see you’re a stunner, right?” she says, elbowing Milo in the side.

He stiffens, only for a moment, before his expression relaxes and he looks at me over the top of her head.

“You don’t look half as bad as you did five days ago,” he jokes.

“Well, that’s a relief,” I say, shifting my weight until Bodhi sidles up next to me, circling his arm around my waist for support.

“I’m Madelyn, Bodhi’s cousin… sister… uhh, yeah, I’m still working on that one,” she shrugs.

“It’s nice to meet you,” I say, and I mean it. I’ve been so closed off to people the last few years, and the prospect of possibly having all these people in my corner is more comforting than I thought it would be.

“Alright, we can finish up this little meet and greet later. I’m gonna take her back and let her get off her feet,” Bodhi tells Milo and Madelyn.

“I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot more of each other in the future,” she says before Bodhi is leading me through the house toward a room in the back.

As soon as I’m in the room, I sink down onto the bed with a heavy sigh. After sleeping for three days straight, I wouldn’t think I’d be so tired, but that is pretty much all I want to do these days. The doctor said it was perfectly normal after such a serious accident. My body is going to be in overdrive trying to heal itself, so sleep is probably a great idea.

“Do you need anything?” Bodhi asks, watching me from where he stands at the edge of the bed.

It honestly feels so surreal to be here with him right now, and all I want to do is curl up into his side for the rest of the night, but that’s going to have to wait.

“Is San still here?” I ask, running my fingertips over the quilt beneath me.

“Yeah, I think he’s in the kitchen talking with everyone.”
