“Sure, but I’ll be right inside if you need me, okay, Bo?” she says.

I nod my head and thank her with a sad smile. Once she’s back inside, Rob steps forward, grasping me by the shoulder.

“Are you alright?” he asks, bracing for the worst.

“I don’t know,” I say, voice weak and cracked.

“How about telling me what happened?” His steady voice calms me down just enough. I know this man. I can trust him. But then again, if he really is my… if he is, he left me for another man to raise, and stood by watching all the shit I went through.

“Mom invited me and my girlfriend to dinner at their house,” I start, swallowing down a shaky breath.

“Girlfriend?” he asks, looking happily surprised.

“Yeah, Keaton. But I think she just broke up with me,” I say, furrowing my brows. I haven’t really thought over that moment since it happened. The news of my paternity taking precedent for the time being.

“Why do you think that?” he asks.

“Well, she took my keys and drove off in my car,” I say, finding humor in the act. For so long, she wouldn’t take my help. Fussing over borrowing my car. Then she goes and takes it.

“Uh,” Rob stares at me, confused.

“It’s fine. Her car is at my house,” I say, hoping that’s enough clarification to move on.

“Okay? So, what’s the problem, then?”

I sniff, wiping the back of my hand over my eyes. “My… dad… called her trash, and then everything spiraled after that,” I say, not wanting to get into the whole Mateo topic at the moment. “We fought, and she stormed out. I ran back in to give dad a piece of my mind, and…” I say, trailing off, unsure how to say it.

“And, what?” Rob asks, shaking his head back and forth, clearly confused over what transpired from that point to me showing up in tears.

I don’t blame him. I’m pretty confused myself.

“He… he told me something. About you,” I begin, slowly hedging the topic.

“About me?” he asks, brow arched in puzzlement.

“And me,” I say, and see the moment it lights up in his eyes. He knows exactly why I’m here.

“Bodhi, I…” he stutters to silence, mouth hanging open in bewilderment.

“So, it’s true? You and my mom?” I ask, shuffling my feet where I stand.

“Bodhi, we were young, and she was hurting, and I—”

“What? Took advantage of her vulnerability?” I ask, displeased with the answer.

“No, never. I loved her, I really did, but it went too far. We knew that, and then you happened, and…” He stands there, palms opened and empty, as if to show me that even he doesn’t have all the answers I’m searching for.

“And what? I just ruined everyone’s plans?” I snap, frustrated over constantly feeling like the unwanted child weighing heavier on me by the second.

“No,” he’s quick to say.

“So, what, you just knock her up and then run? Let your brother deal with your mistakes? Well, let me tell you, he did a shit job of it,” I shout, anger fueling me.

“She chose him!” He shouts right back, before dragging his hands through his hair, attempting to find some semblance of calm in the storm I just dropped on him.

“She chose him and asked me to keep it a secret. I loved her, and didn’t want to hurt her, so I did. I thought I was doing what was right,” he says, pleading with me to understand.

“Well, you weren’t,”
