“Well, I suppose it couldn’t hurt, so long as you don’t say anything,” he says, cautiously, but I know his type. He’d do anything to help me play detective. Keaton’s little buddy would have never budged.

“Of course not, I’d never say a word,” I say, growing impatient.

“The warehouse is registered to one Mateo Chavez. We apprehended him outside of Bayview Federal Bank this morning. Does the name ring any bells?”

Oh, it’s ringing all sorts of bells.

“No sir, I can’t say that it does,” I lie.

“Well, your fan theory still may hold true. We’ll definitely consider it. We’re detaining him for questioning, but still have to wait for his attorney to arrive, so it may be a while still,” he tells me, just gossiping away.

“Take all the time you need. Thank you for calling,” I say, ready to end this phone call before he gets any chummier.

“Of course, Mr. Kane,” he says.

“Okay, m’bye,” I say and hang up, not waiting for his response.

I stand and punch the air. He may not be detained for very long, but still, it’ll send a message.

Don’t fuck with me or what’s mine.

Chapter 55

I should have canceled our plans. The very idea of having to be around people right now is more than I can handle, but here I am, riding shotgun to Bodhi’s parents.

The entire drive over to his place, I was trying to figure out how to broach the subject of my mortgage with him, but every scenario ended with me wringing his neck.

After finding out about Mateo’s arrest, I decided to hold off at least another day on making a deposit into his account. I thought that maybe I could swing by the bank, work something out and maybe make a partial payment, and then get into a race after dinner to come up with the rest. Only when I sat down and talked with the loan officer, she informed me that the payment was taken care of the day before.

She did a little digging for me when I asked if she knew who made the payment, but the only thing on file was that it was made in cash through one of the tellers late yesterday morning.

That was right around the time I’d talked to both Sander and Bodhi about it. They were literally the only ones who knew.

My bet was on Bodhi. Not that I didn’t think Sander would do something like this, but the payment was made in full, and I didn’t think San just happened to have six thousand extra dollars just lying around.

No, this had Bodhi’s name all over it, and now I had to confront him about it.

Unfortunately, it’s going to have to wait until later.

“Here we are,” Bodhi says from beside me as we pull up the drive to one of the nicest houses I think I’ve ever seen. I thought Bodhi’s house was big, but this… this is enormous.

Who needs a house this big?

I bet they don’t even appreciate it. Not the way I would. Not that I’d ever see myself living in a house like this. The gray stone exterior lends to a more rustic feel, but I have a feeling there isn’t anything rustic about the interior.

“You grew up here?” I ask, stepping out of the car and take in the columns framing the front door that looks about twice as tall as any normal door.

“Yeah,” Bodhi chuckles, rounding the hood and coming to stand at my side, hands casually tucked away in the front pockets of his slacks.

He said I didn’t have to dress up, but when I found out he was going to wear slacks and a button down, I opted for a dress. Better safe than sorry. Though, my mid-length bodycon dress was anything but formal. The short sleeves and scoop neck gave it a more casual feel, but it was one of the few black dresses I owned anymore.

I paired it with strappy heels and a simple gold chain necklace my mom had given me for my sixteenth birthday. The tiny golden disk engraved with the letter K was just cute enough to make the cut.

Still, I was nervous about meeting his mom. I knew that her approval was important to him, and still I wondered what he’d do if she didn’t approve.

“I actually spent most of my time in the garage, or at my uncle’s house. My cousin, Madelyn, and I are only a couple of years apart, so we ended up spending a lot of time together whenever my dad took Tommy with him to the track,” he says.

“Still, I can’t imagine living somewhere like this,” I say.
