“I just got off the phone with Louis,” she says, and I hold my breath, waiting for the worst.

“And?”

She takes a deep breath, looking me straight in the eyes.

“Mateo Chavez was just arrested.”

Chapter 54

“Mr. Kane, this is Officer Frank Pruitt with the Sancte Alto Police Department,” the voice says as soon as I answer the phone.

“Sir,” I answer, bouncing my knee in anticipation.

“I didn’t think I’d have the pleasure of interacting with you on more than one occasion, but I am sorry it’s under such circumstances… again.” The officer says, and I swear I recognize that voice. I just can’t place it.

“Sir?”

“From your accident a few months back. I showed the picture we took to the misses, and she just couldn’t believe it,” he says, and I realize who I’m talking to.

What are the odds that I’d have to deal with this guy again? I bet he saw the report and jumped at the opportunity to talk to me again.

“Oh, yes, I do remember now,” I say, rolling my eyes, but laying the charm on. Maybe it will work to my advantage.

“You do?” he asks, sounding overjoyed.

“I do. Please, tell me you have some good news for me?” I ask, hoping to move the process along.

“Yes, we found your car,” he says, and I grin, knowing they would.

The day after I made that stupid bet, after I took Keaton to pick up her car from Milo’s, I made a quick little stop at the station and reported my car was stolen. Knowing that Mateo pulled the same shit with Keaton’s brother just somehow made it all feel like poetic justice.

“Really?” I say, sure to pitch my voice just high enough to sound genuinely surprised.

“Yes, sir. It was located at a warehouse on Tenth and Ellis,” he says.

“A warehouse?” I ask, playing my part, but still curious.

“Apparently it’s used by the owner as a stereo installation business,” he explains.

I’ve never heard of anyone over that way installing stereos, but I guess if you’re going to have a ton of street cars just sitting around, then it works as a pretty good front.

“I never took my car there,” I tell him. “I had my stereos done at Rush’s Automotive. I have the receipts if you need them.”

It isn’t a lie, either. Milo does all of my work when I require any.

“I don’t think that will be necessary, but I do ask that you give us some time to look into this, seeing as the owner swears he knew nothing about your car being stolen.”

He sounds like he’s trying to get more information out of me, but I do my best to sound as clueless about this as possible.

“Well, can I ask who the guy is? Maybe I know him?” I ask, hoping to get some confirmation.

“I’m sorry, I’m not supposed to divulge that information at this time,” he says, and I wrack my brain, thinking of what I could say to get him to tell me.

“I understand. I was only hoping that maybe if it had been a fan or someone just hoping to get my attention, there might be something we could do for him,” I say.

“Oh, I never considered that,” he says, and pauses for a moment.

I hold my breath, willing him to tell me.
