“Why are you up?”

“Bathroom,” she answers, and I crack my eye to look over at her. “Also, to text my mom so she doesn’t worry.”

I hadn’t even thought about that. I guess the fact that she’s willing to stay the night with me at all must mean something. I know how important it is to her that she be able to take care of her mom to the best of her ability.

Minutes pass by and I can feel her fidgeting beside me.

“What’s wrong?”

She sighs, exhaling loudly.

“How am I supposed to get to work on Monday?”

“Babe,” I say and smooth down her hair, drawing her near and kissing the side of her head.

It figures she would be up worrying about this, but I guess I can’t really blame her. Last night was crazy. Hell, her last couple months have been crazy. I know that she has every right to be concerned, but I wish she would just trust me to take care of it for once.

“What?” Her high-pitched voice cracks with emotion.

“Don’t panic,” I attempt to soothe her worries, but she rolls to face me, and I can see in her eyes that now isn’t the time to argue with her.

“I am not panicking, but if I were—”

“You would have every right to,” I interject, and she falls quiet. “Listen, I was going to mention this earlier, but honestly, with everything going on, I forgot.”

“What?” she asks and her eyes widen slightly.

“I talked to Milo yesterday, and he said the Camaro is ready to be picked up.” Her eyes light up and I swear if she were standing, she’d probably be dancing with excitement. “I was going to surprise you with it, but given the circumstances, I think it would be better if I just took you over in the morning.”

“It’s ready? Really?” She props herself up onto her elbow to look down at me.

“That’s what he said,” I smile, happy to see some of the anxiety leave her body.

“Thank fuck,” she flops back onto the bed, stretching her arms over her head.

“We’ll go first thing,” I say.

“Thank you,” she says, and her eyes soften as she reaches up to comb her fingers through my hair.

“You have nothing to thank me for, Princess. It was my fault the car needed maintenance, anyway.”

“True,” she rolls her eyes teasingly, “but you didn’t have to lend me a car and all of that.”

“I know. I wanted to though.” I lean in and press my lips against hers.

When I pull back, she’s frowning again.

“What are you going to do about your car? Honestly?”

When she looks at me with all that worry and concern in her eyes, I know that I can’t tell her what I’m actually planning. That in the morning, I’ll report my car as stolen, and since I know it will be in Mateo’s possession, he’ll be dealt a heaping portion of his own medicine. I hope it burns all the way down, too.

When I decide to press charges, that fucker will be put behind bars where he belongs, and maybe then justice can be served. For her brother and mine.

I want that for her so badly. I brush my fingertips over her cheekbone as I stare down at her and smile.

“Let him have it,” I shrug, not letting the double meaning in my words shine through.

“What?” Her eyebrows shoot up in surprise.
