The next thing I knew, she opened her door and pulled out a bag. While she opened it up and started looking through it, I took note of the rest of the interior.

That’s when something hit me.

Indy had told me that she’d come to Blue Spruce Ski Resort for an interview. While that wasn’t necessarily a problem, things were starting to fall into place a bit for me.

Because it made no sense that Indy would have several bags filled with clothing as well as other random items packed into her car simply to come here for an interview. Unless, of course, my awful suspicions were correct.

I recalled my conversation with her yesterday morning when I asked about there not being any rooms left in the hotel, and Indy had answered that she never checked. Then she’d told me how lucky I was to have the camper just now, which was two days after we’d stood outside watching the avalanche and she’d said how much she’d loved to have a house on wheels like mine.

I was pretty sure I was standing next to her house on wheels.

God, the thought that she was living out of her car made me sick.

I wanted to say something to her, to understand more about her situation, but I didn’t want to make her uncomfortable or have her shutting down on me.

When Indy stood, slung the bag over her shoulder, and looked up at me, I was grateful she decided to speak, because I felt a painful burn in my lungs that would have prevented me from doing so.

“I feel like I need to do something,” she declared.

“Pardon?”

With her palm facing up, she gestured toward the car and clarified, “For you doing this for me.”

I lifted one hand up between us, palm facing her, and insisted, “It’s really okay. I didn’t mind at all.”

I’d barely gotten those words out when she asked, “Can I show you my appreciation by buying you dinner at the lodge tonight?”

If my instincts were correct, she was struggling as it was. There was not a chance I was going to allow her to buy dinner, but there was no way in hell I was going to miss the opportunity to have dinner with her.

So, I smiled and said, “I’d be happy to have dinner with you. I assume you’ll want to shower first?”

She nodded.

“Yeah, me too. How about I meet you back at the lodge around five-thirty? Will that work?”

“That sounds perfect, Griffin. I’ll see you then.”

With that, I turned to the side and allowed Indy to move past me, so she could head back to the lodge. I watched her go.

And only after she was safely inside did I make my way back to the camper with a smile on my face.

EIGHT

Indy

I felt like a million bucks.

Considering how desperate my financial situation was, I thought that was saying something.

Of course, the reason I felt the way I did right now had little, if anything, to do with money.

I’d just gotten out of the shower, my first one in two days, and I felt revitalized. While the shower had been magnificent, there was something else adding to my upbeat mood.

I was actually looking forward to having dinner with Griffin tonight. I could hardly believe it myself.

Granted, there was a part of me that knew how bad of an idea this was, but I didn’t necessarily care. When I took the time to think about it, I realized things couldn’t get much worse than they already were.

Besides, this dinner was just going to be a friendly dinner, a means for me to show Griffin my appreciation for what he’d done for me. He’d been unbelievably kind to me on more than one occasion, and I thought he deserved to have me at least buy him dinner.
