“When is the water ever not perfect for you, Makoa?” I said with a laugh.

“We heard you’re quite the swimmer,” said Kai. “You wanna show us? Or do you need Ari here to hold your hand?”

I scoffed and got to my feet. “Excuse me? Absolutely not.”

“See you in the water, then, brotha!” said Makoa, and he spun around and dashed back down the beach with the rest of us hot on his tail.

I went to bed with a pleasant ache in my muscles from a day of swimming and an evening of riding Ari’s cock. The sun had cooked my skin a shade darker, and being in the water had pricked up my appetite for a good fucking, even more than usual. I felt like a thriving plant, happily indulging myself in all the things I craved. I had the forest, I had the sea, and I had Ari.

Even after he’d left me filled and shivering from three orgasms, I still hadn’t been satisfied. I’d straddled him with his exhausted cock strapped in place with twisted vines and fucked him until he couldn’t come another drop.

And I probably could’ve kept going.

“Istil,” Ari grumbled from his bed as I slipped into mine.

“Yeah?”

I looked over my shoulder at him. He was tucked in, his eyes squinty and tired.

“I…” He paused, and whatever he was going to say seemed to float off somewhere else. A leaf fell from an overhanging plant and fluttered onto his face. He grunted it and brushed it away, then rolled over and pulled his blanket up. “Good night.”

I settled into my bed and the warm embrace of exhaustion. I felt the baby move like she also was settling in.

Hope we didn’t disturb you, little one,I thought, chuckling to myself.

It felt like I’d only closed my eyes for a moment, but the moonlight on the wall said I’d been asleep for hours. The whir of crickets and other night insects drifted through the air. I began to drift back to sleep, and then I heard Ari groan. All the insects quieted to a whisper. He grumbled something incoherent and distressed. He was having another nightmare.

I slipped out of my bed and padded across the room, pushing aside the tree fronds that hung like a curtain dividing the space between our beds. He’d thrown the blanket aside, exposing his naked chest to the moonlight, and he lay stiff on his back with his hands balled up into fists over his stomach like he was tied in place. He was frowning with his eyes clamped tightly shut, and he shook his head back and forth on the pillow.

“Ari,” I whispered as I came up to his side.

Slowly, hesitantly, I reached to touch his shoulder.

“I won’t,” he murmured. “Not her. I refuse.”

I sat down on the edge of his bed and ran my palm across his chest. His heart was beating so fast. What kind of nightmare was he having?

“Ari,” I said, shaking him gently. “You need to wake up. Wake up.”

With a sharp inhale, his eyes flew open. He looked angry, or maybe afraid, and then confused. “What?” he said, looking around. “Shit… I was dreaming.”

“Yes,” I said. “A nightmare. You’ve been having them for a while.”

He rubbed his eyes and squinted at me. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know I was disturbing you.”

I shook my head. He hadn’t been disturbing me—I was just worried about him. “Is it the same nightmare every time?” I asked.

“How did you know?”

“You talk in your sleep.”

“Ah,” he groaned. “What did I say?”

“Just muttering things. ‘No.’ And tonight, you said, ‘not her’.”

Ari stared blankly into the darkness of the room like he could see the dream happening again right there in the corner. “I’m embarrassed to have woken you,” he said, finally.
