Joy fluttered her eyelashes. “It means I get by on my looks. I don’t need to be wealthy or famous because I’m gorgeous.”

The woman sitting across from her was, unquestionably, breathtakingly beautiful. But the idea that she was so blasé about leveraging her genetic jackpot was more than a bit off-putting. She worked to keep her expression neutral and said, “I see.”

She must’ve failed because Joy laughed. “You’re disgusted? Is being born stunning any different than being seven feet tall and becoming a professional basketball player or having two geniuses for parents and inheriting an off-the-charts IQ? Why shouldn’t I take advantage of what I have?”

Sasha shrugged. She had a point. “So, is there a different application process for beautiful people?”

She shook her head. “I don’t know. You’d probably send them a headshot or some links to your profiles. But I didn’t apply. Rex recruited me.”

“He recruited you?” Sasha echoed.

“Right. When he was getting Silver Spoon off the ground, he decided to seed the member pool by paying gorgeous women to join. I was modeling at the time, and he approached my agency.”

“You were paid to join the dating app?

“Yes. I get fifty thousand dollars a year for as long as I stay an active member of Silver Spoon.”

“What does being an active member entail?” Sasha asked carefully. “Are you required to accept a certain number of dates or provide any services?”

Joy bristled and straightened her spine, holding herself erect in the chair. “I’m not an escort if that’s what you’re asking. I have to log in once a month and update my profile picture a few times a year. That’s all.”

Sasha steepled her fingers. “How much does it cost for a regular person—well, a regular-looking rich person—to join?”

“The base membership fee is a hundred grand a year.”

“And Grady doesn’t know you’re a ringer?”

“No, of course not.”

“Did Rex recognize you when he met you?”

She sighed. “Yes. He pulled me aside while everyone was getting settled into their rooms. He told me I had to tell Grady, or he would.”

Sasha rubbed the heels of her palms over her eyes. These people were exhausting. “Did you?”

“Did I what?”

“Tell Grady.”

She scoffed. “No. I told Rex he was a crappy excuse for a human being and he could go straight to hell.”

“Did anyone overhear you?”

She thought for a moment, then shook her head. “Not that I know of. Although, we were in the hallway outside the bedrooms. So, someone might have heard from inside one of the rooms. I was pretty ticked off, so my volume might have been … high.”

Just then, the office door opened. Leo rushed in with Maisy on his heels.

“Hey, Joy and I were—”

“—We need to talk to you. Now,” Leo cut her off.

CHAPTER17

Sasha closed the door behind her, leaving Joy in the office, and joined Leo and Maisy in the hallway.

“What’s up?”

Leo scanned the corridor to confirm no one was in earshot and pulled her over to the corner near the fireplace. “Go ahead, Maisy. Tell her.”
