“Meaning?”

“Meaning, he threatened to launch a hostile takeover of their company if Tessa wouldn’t sleep with him. Grady was furious.”

Sasha’s eyes widened. “That’s extreme.”

“Right? And it was weird because he said it to Grady, not Tessa. What was Grady supposed to do about it—force her to have sex with the guy? I thought Grady should tell Tessa and let her handle it. If she couldn’t reason with him, well, she slept with him plenty of times—what’s one more?”

Sasha cocked her head and stared, transfixed, the way Mocha, her chocolate lab, stared when she heard the rustle of the dog food bag.

“What? Grady should lose everything he’s worked for because of a lovers’ spat?”

“Of course not. But surely there’s a solution short of Tessa having sex with Rex.”

“Well, I guess the problem’s been permanently solved now.” Joy arched an eyebrow.

Sasha gave her a long look. “Tessa was with Leeza when Rex was killed.”

“I never said Tessa did it.”

Something about Joy unsettled Sasha. Where the devil was Connelly? She shifted her attention to the door, willing it to open, but it remained firmly closed. Rescue was not imminent. She sighed and switched tacks.

“How did you and Grady meet?”

“I swiped right.”

It took a few seconds to register. “On a dating app?”

Joy giggled. “Not just any dating app. Silver Spoon.”

She was waiting for a reaction. Instead, Sasha gave her a blank stare.

“You don’t know what that is, do you?”

Woman, I’ve been married for a decade. I have eight-year-old twins, a dog, a cat, and a mortgage. I’m the founder and managing partner of a boutique law firm. I sleep four hours a night—five if I’m lucky. Do you think I’m up on all the latest hookup apps?

“No,” she said simply.

“Silver Spoon was one of Rex’s first successful ideas. He sold it a few years ago. It’s a dating service specifically for high-net-worth individuals and celebrities. He described it as matchmaking for the rich and famous. There’s an application process, a financial review, and personal vetting. Getting on to Silver Spoon is harder than joining the FBI or being accepted at an Ivy League university.”

“Sounds like Tessa and Grady are missing an expansion opportunity—they could get rich people to pay them a million bucks to get picked for the dating app.”

Joy laughed, and then, after a second, she blinked. “You know, that’s actually a brilliant idea.”

Sasha sighed. “Let’s focus. You met Grady on Silver Spoon.”

“Right.”

“Which one are you—rich or famous?”

“What? Oh. I’m a member because face card is accepted everywhere.”

She narrowed her eyes. Joy was indisputably speaking English, but Sasha didn’t have the faintest idea what she meant.

“Face card?”

“Seriously? How oldareyou?”

“I’m ancient,” Sasha said dryly. “What does face card mean?”
