“He doesn’t think anything. I don’t pay him to think. Plus what? I screwed my girl.”

“Why do you keep calling me your girl? I’m not your girl.”

“Yes, you are,” he says. “Unless you don’t want to be my girl.”

I stare at him for a couple of seconds. “I’m not saying that I do want to be your girl, and I’m not saying that I don’t want to be your girl, but you can’t even ask me that if you haven’t taken me on a date yet.”

“Fair enough,” he says. “I did invite you to dinner though.”

“Uh-huh. Come on, let’s go.” We walk to the door and then head downstairs. He touches the side of my back and grabs my hand for a second.

“Hey, Ella,” he says before we walk into the street.

I look up at him curiously. “Yeah?”

“I do like you, you know. You get that, right? It’s not just about the sex or anything.” He sounds slightly disjointed and I’m surprised because he’s normally so confident.

“Hey, are you being serious right now?” I say, glancing at him.

“Yeah. Why?”

“I don’t know. It’s just weird. You’re always joking around all the time.”

“I just want you to know that this is special and we will have to tell your parents at some point, and Sam. If I survive past us telling them, then I want to take you on some real dates, you know?” He shrugs.

“No, I don’t know. What does that mean?”

“We’ll talk about it later,” he says. I stare at him for a couple of seconds and my heart feels like it’s soaring. Does helike me, like me? Is this about more than sex? Do Ilike him, like him? I already know the answer to that, but I’m not going to say anything. We get into the back of the car and the driver takes us over to Danny’s. I can see Danny standing outside, and I frown. Why is he outside and not in the apartment?

“Stay here,” I say to Colton. “Do not get out of the car. I won’t be a minute.”

Colton lets out a deep sigh. “This is not a good idea, Ella, but I’m going to listen to you.”

“Thank you,” I say as I slide out of the car. I head over to Danny. He walks over to me and gives me a big hug. He holds me a little too tightly for a little too long, but I just stand there. He must really be in need of someone.

He steps back. “Hey, thank you so much for coming over.”

“It’s okay. Is everything okay? How’s Frannie?”

“Huh?” he says, blinking, staring at me.

“Is she okay? Was she crying about her mom or something?”

“No.” He shakes his head. “Why would she be crying about her mom?”

“I mean, because I figured that’s why you would really want to talk to me.” I’m confused now. “What’s going on, Danny? I don’t understand why you called me.”

“I was hoping that we could go somewhere,” his voice deeper than I’ve ever heard before and a trickle of something ominous is creeping up my spine.

“What?” I know I sound like a bit of an idiot, just standing there, hoping beyond hope that this isn’t going where I think it’s going.

“I was hoping we could go somewhere.”

“But what about Frannie?” I say, looking at him hard, desperately hoping Frannie will pop out and say, “Boo.” And then we will all laugh like this is some big bad joke. It’s not a particularly funny one, but then Danny’s not exactly Adam Sandler.

“She’s upstairs with a babysitter.”

“A babysitter? Wait, what? I didn’t realize you had several.” I blink in confusion. Hadn’t he once told me that I was the only person he trusted to look after Frannie?
