I am about to turn the phone off when it starts ringing again. I feel nervous for a few moments as I contemplate other reasons why he may be calling. “What if he’s calling about Sam? Shit, what if something happened to Sam?” I talk out loud, jump up and pace back and forth before grabbing the phone reluctantly. “Hello,” I mutter into the phone, annoyed that he’s gotten me to answer him again.

“What are you doing?” he asks, sounding slightly irritated. “You took forever to answer.”

“What do you mean, what am I doing?” I look at my watch. “It’s one o’clock in the morning. Is Sam okay?” I snap.

“Yeah. Why would you ask me that?”

“Then why are you calling me at one a.m.?” I’m irritated now.

“Because I need you to do something for me.”

“Are you joking?”

“Why would I be joking? Are you or are you not my assistant, making thirty grand a month?”

“Really, Colton?” I can hear my voice rising like I’m practicing the scales.

“What?” he says. “I can pay you less if you want, but if I’m paying you thirty grand, you will be available to me when I need you.”

I bite down on my lower lip. “What is it you want?” I can barely control my anger, and I very much want to tell him to go and take a long walk off a short cliff. A very short cliff.

“I need you to run an errand.”

“What? Right now?” I’m pissed. If he asks me to bring him a burger and fries, I will scream.

“Yes, right now.” He’s chuckling now like it’s funny. It’s then that I notice I can hear music in the background and some girls laughing.

“Where are you?” I ask him, frowning.

“I’m out at a club.”

“You are out at a club? Then why the hell are you calling me, the person who’s home and in bed sleeping, to run an errand? Are you out of your mind?”

“Nah, not out of my mind. I need you to go and buy me a box of rubbers.” He chuckles again, and I freeze.

“What?” My jaw drops. “Are you freaking kidding me?”

“I used up my last condoms with you last night, and well, I want to take my date home and—”

“You want me to go and buy you a box of condoms for your date?”

“Hey, you speak English, and you finally understand. Great. Go and get them and be at my place within forty-five minutes.” He hangs up, and I just stare at the phone. I power it off and head toward my bedroom. I cannot believe the nerve of this man. He really thinks I’m going to buy him condoms? I’m so angry that I cannot think straight. I am so pissed off that I start fluffing my pillows really hard into the mattress, imagining they are his face. I’m also kind of jealous, not because I like him, but because he just slept with me and now he wants to sleep with someone else. Was it really that unmemorable to him? Am I really not that special? I mean, I know I’m not special, but I feel like there should be some time period after me.

I’m about to get into bed when an idea crosses my mind. I smile to myself, grab a sweater and head toward the door with my handbag. I know I’m being immature, but I don’t care. I head down to the corner store and look around for what I want, find a box, pick it up, and pay for it. Then I make my way to Colton’s apartment. I’m curious to see what his date looks like. If she’s pretty. She’s most probably gorgeous, a supermodel, or an actress, or something. That’s when I do feel a slight amount of jealousy, but not because I care. I really don’t care. I just wish that I had more of a life than to be headed out doing his errands at this time of night.

I ring the doorbell and bang on the door loudly as I get to his place. He answers it and stares at me in my disheveled state. “You got the stuff?”

“Yes,” I say, glaring at him.

“Come on in, then.”

“What do you mean, ‘Come on in’? I’m just going to give it to you, and then—”

“Inside,” he says.

I step inside the apartment and frown. “You’re such a jackass. You know that, right?”

“I think you may have told me that once or twice before.”
