“I mean, I don’t know. Times are rough ’round here, and if I have a drink, or I get lonely or horny, or… It could happen, but it won’t be because of money.”

“Okay,” she says, “no need to be so defensive.”

“You would be defensive, as well, if I asked you if you were considering a life as a prostitute.”

“Okay, fine. That’s not exactly what I was saying, but—”

“But anyways, he started doing a striptease for me while I was on the phone with my mom.”

“Oh my gosh, no way.”

“I know, and then he asked me to give him a massage.”

“And you told him no?”

“Oh, I gave him a massage, all right, and then my finger accidentally slipped.” I giggle.

“What? What do you mean it accidentally slipped? Slipped where?”

“Nearly slipped into his butthole.” I burst out laughing. “He jumped so high. I thought it was hilarious.”

“Wow. I cannot believe you did that.”

“Why not?” I say. “He thinks he’s in control and I’m some little fool that’s going to act all shy and embarrassed. I’m not shy because I slept with him. I’m just pissed off because it was with him.”

“I know, girl. You don’t like him.”

“I have reason to not like him.”

“Trust me, I know, Ella. I agree with you. He treated you so poorly in the past. But you do have to admit he’s a hottie.”

“Well, obviously, I think he’s a hottie, or I wouldn’t have slept with him.” I sigh. “But it’s not going to happen again. I’m just going to be his assistant and do whatever I’ve got to do, aside from sleep with him, of course. Then we’ll go to Christmas in Florida, which, by the way, I’ve been looking on Instagram, and everyone’s lives are so glamorous. Really makes me feel like I am such a loser.”

“You’re not a loser, though.”

“Compared to everyone else I went to high school with, I’m the biggest loser going.”

“Oh, Ella, don’t feel that way.”

“I know I shouldn’t, but no man, no money, no nothing. I cannot go back home and meet up with those girls and show them who I am.”

“Then what are you going to do?”

“I need to find someone to take with me or win the lottery.”

“Good luck with that,” she says, laughing.

“Yeah, I know. It’s very unlikely to happen, but maybe there’s a unicorn out there somewhere waiting to make my dreams come true.”

“A unicorn?” she asks.

“I don’t know. I’m tired.” I laugh. “I don’t even know what I’m saying. I’m just going to watch some TV now and go to bed early.” I yawn loudly.

“Okay, sweet dreams. Want to hang out tomorrow?”

“Sounds good.” I hang up and lean back into the couch. I decide to watch some episodes ofRules of Engagement, one of my favorite TV sitcoms, instead of the murder mystery. “I should go to bed.” I yawn without moving from the couch. I don’t have a TV near my bed, so I decide to stay where I am. My mind flashes to Colton again and how confusing everything is. Then I wonder how his date is going and if he’s going to sleep with her.

I must drift to sleep because my ringing phone wakes me up at one a.m. I groan when I see that it is Colton. “Why are you calling me? I thought you had a date,” I mumble as I stare at the phone. I am not going to answer it. However, as it continues ringing, I can feel a twinge of something in my heart, but I don’t know what it is. I know it’s not jealousy. I don’t care how many women he dates. He can date all of the women in Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, and Brooklyn, and I won’t care. I stare at the phone and let it ring and go to voice mail. “I’m not answering,” I say, even though the phone is no longer ringing. I don’t want to hear about his date.
