“The brat is here.” He hauled me through the room. “You shouldn’t have left me, Macy. You should never run.”

“I don’t want to be with you, Scott.” There was no longer any of the nice, easy-going man I’d met so many months ago. Maybe it had never been there. He’d certainly kept the controlling part of himself well hidden.

His gaze bored into mine, and he drew me up on my toes. “You’remine.”

When Colt said those words, all I felt was a sense of rightness, a click as things fell into place. When Scott said it, it was like nails on a chalkboard. Wrong. So very wrong.

“I love you,” he said. “You’ll always be mine.”

“I’m not yours, Scott. This isn’t love. You need help. I don’t love you, and I don’t want to be with you.”

“Be quiet!” he roared.

“Where’s Daisy?” I raised my voice. “Daisy!”

I heard a muffled voice at the back of the house and yanked free of Scott.

“Daisy!”

When I entered the empty kitchen, I spotted Daisy huddled on the floor, her back to the cupboards. Relief shot through me. Her face was tear-stained, but she was otherwise unharmed.

“Daisy.”

“Macy!”

I saw her face crumple. She launched herself at me and I caught her, hugging her hard.

“Where’s Daddy?”

I swallowed. “Looking for you.” Out of Scott’s view, I handed her my cellphone. I lowered my voice. “I’m getting you out of here. When you’re free, call him.”

Her lips trembled. “What about you?”

My belly tied in knots. “Don’t worry, sweetheart. I’ll get out. I’ll be right behind you. You just get to your dad.”

She bit her bottom lip. “Macy—”

“Enough of the whispering,” Scott barked.

I whirled to face him, pushing Daisy behind me.

“I’ve had enough of her.” He pointed a finger at Daisy. “She bit me.” He held up one hand.

I could see the nasty bite mark.Good girl. I squeezed her fingers. “You have me now. Let her go.”

His gaze narrowed, a calculating gleam in them. “That asshole touched you. Kept you from me.”

“I’m not a thing, Scott. I make my own decisions.”

“You’remine. I want to make him pay for taking you.” His gaze fell on Daisy.

Oh, no.Vicious protectiveness rushed through me. “Get ready to run,” I murmured.

Daisy squeezed my fingers.

“This has to stop, Scott.”

He laughed. “I’m in charge here. You will love me. We’ll be together forever.”
