I briefly think about messaging the prof to come and get us, but I don’t want to disturb Malia if she’s asleep, and I know he won’t leave her. I sigh, realising that we’re facing a long walk back to campus and either an overnight stay in the spare dorms if we’re unfortunate, or if we get lucky, we might just be able to pinch a golf cart to take us home. Either way, it’s going to be a long night.

And I’m tired.

Tired of all of it. We just want this mission done now. I thought it was so that I could go home, but it’s starting to lose whatever appeal it once had. It’s not like I can really remember it anyway. And besides, I don’t want to leave Malia behind.

I can, however, sense that our time is running out. Attacks and disappearances are increasing, a sure sign that the Shikari are getting restless. I need this mission completed with the right outcome so that I know she’s safe.

Even if we can’t be together.

I had the strangest dream last night, only to wake up and find that it was true. Or partially true at least. I dreamt that the prof brought me up to his bedroom and played music for me, then did some strange sort of massage on my feet. My cheeks heat when I remember my reaction to that in my dream.

Only, Iamin the professor’s bed – alone, thankfully – and my phone and a pair of headphones are beside the bed on the crate that doubles as a side table.

God, I hope the rest of the dream wasn’t real. I might die of embarrassment if I orgasmed from a foot massage from my teacher!

My dream didn’t end there though. I dreamt that after I fell asleep, the professor came back to check on me, tucked me in and kissed me on the head.

It was one of the best nights’ sleeps I’ve ever had.

Still, that doesn’t stop me feeling uncomfortable and scrambling to get out of his bed and his room as quickly as possible. I grab my phone and bolt. Thankfully, I don’t meet anyone and I’m able to slip into the bathroom to get ready, and then dash into Cove’s room to change.

When I’m presentable, I pack my school bag and head downstairs. I don’t care what anyone says, I’m going to class. Whispered, tense voices filter up the stairs. Straining to listen, I hold my breath and inch my way closer to the kitchen.

“I still say we should tell her,” Bhodi insists.

“No. What good will it do?” That’s Cove speaking.

“At least she’ll be able to…”

“Protect herself? Against Shikari?” The scorn in his voice doesn’t sound like him at all. They’re talking about me, right? What do they mean tell me? Tell me what? Why do I need to protect myself? What are Shikari?

“Umm, guys, maybe we should shelve this conversation for later. Malia will be down soon,” Reef adds.

Shit. Did he hear me? Does he know I’m eavesdropping?

I pause a beat before deliberately banging on the stairs and appearing around the corner. The room is tense.

“Hi. Morning.”

“How’s your head?” Cove asks, giving me a bright smile.

“Better than I deserve.” I wince. “Do not let me drink like that again,” I beg, with a slight laugh. The others join me. “How are you all?”

“Ah, we’re fine. It takes more than a few drinks to take us out.”

“Did you carry on drinking after I went…to bed?”

“We went out actually. Knew you were in safe hands with the prof,” Bhodi replies with a wink that makes my cheeks heat.

The prof is sitting at the breakfast table alongside the others, but resolutely ignoring me. Until I step forward and drop my bag on the floor to take my seat.

“What’s that?” he demands sharply.

“Umm, my school bag.”

“I thought we agreed you were staying here.”

“Umm no. You told me I was staying here, but said if I went to class
