I need to stay strong.

You need to give in. You’ll be so much happier when you do.

Leaning forward, I place the slightest hint of a kiss on her forehead.

I’m doomed.

Bhodi hangs up the phone and grins sloppily at us.

I shake my head, still unconvinced by his stupid plan.

“What?” he demands, still grinning from ear to ear like the cat who got the cream…and who got slightly punch-drunk from drinking too much of it.

“This isn’t going to work,” I tell him.

“Course it is,” he scoffs. “It’s genius. I am a genie-ass.”

“You’re an ass alright,” Cove quips as I sigh.

Bhodi is becoming so loud and leary. I can see the bar staff giving us the stink eye, and I suspect it’s only a matter of time before they ask us to leave.

“Let’s drink up,” I suggest. I’m not convinced that leaving Malia with the prof was a good idea, and actually, I’m keen to get back and see how she’s feeling.

“Yeah!” Bhodi bellows, making me wince. “We can hit the club!”

“I’m not sure that’s such a good idea.”

“Oh, chill out, dude. You’re almost as uptight as the prof. Maybe you should try getting laid.” He gives me a sloppy wink which is about as subtle as he is.

We all know that he and Malia engaged in some pretty hot and steamy shower sex earlier on. I think they heard Malia’s screams all the way over in Avalon.

It’s not jealousy making me tetchy tonight. It’s become pretty clear that we’re all drawn to Malia, in a way that transcends the prophecy, in my opinion. I know that Bhodi and Cove have gone further with her than the professor or I have, but Bhodi claims he’s been sensing more flares of magic since Malia came home with us. He said the lights in the bathroom did some freaky shit when he washelping her showerearlier, and I swear her hair was more vibrant afterwards. In fact, she looked amazing, and not at all like someone going through the throes of a violent detox.

There have been other things as well, but when I try to concentrate on them, they slip through my memory like sand in a timer.

It’s possible that Malia might be leaking magic. Magic that she definitely doesn’t know she has. And that would be a very bad thing. It could lead the Shikari right to her.

Bhodi’s bright idea was to force the prof and Malia into close proximity with one another, in the hopes that one of them will snap. He seems to think, as he’s explained in great detail tonight over way too many shots, that if Malia and the professor kiss, we’ll know for sure if Malia is the star.

He has some warped logic that all four of us need to kiss her to activate the prophecy or her magic fully or some shit.

I am not convinced, and although Cove seemed sceptical at the start of the night, he’s had so much to drink that he’s starting to think Bhodi might be onto something.

If he is right, the results could actually be catastrophic, which is an even better reason for getting home to check on her.

The sound of breaking glass and Bhodi’s “Oops, shit, sorry, my bad, bro!” brings me back to the present.

Bhodi has staggered into someone’s table, sending drinks and broken glass flying everywhere. The bar staff are approaching with a dustpan and brush and reproachful looks on their faces, and the table of guys whose drinks he’s destroyed are on their feet, hands curled into angry fists.

“I’m afraid we’re going to have to ask you to leave,” one of the bartenders says firmly, with no hint of apology in their tone. I don’t blame them either, they’re probably trying to avoid a fight which will result in even more of their bar being smashed up tonight.

“Sorry,” I say, quickly withdrawing my wallet and handing over a wad of cash to him. “For the damage.”

As Cove scoops a cackling Bhodi up off the floor, I turn to the pissed off men and offer them a wad of cash too. “Sorry guys, my friend here has had too much to drink and not enough food. Allow me to replace your drinks and cover the rest of your evening. No hard feelings.”

The wedge of bills in my hand is thick enough to unfurl their fists and to erase their angry glowers.

I mumble my apologies once more and corral Cove and Bhodi out into the night air. It hits us hard and within five paces, Bhodi’s bent double, puking his guts up. Fun times.
