I wait for the conversation to pick back up, but it doesn’t.

“Umm. How did your…errand go yesterday?” I ask Cove softly.

“It was a dead end. Waste of time. But we did manage to swing by your room and grab some of your things for you.”

He nods over to the front door and my face breaks out into a beaming smile when I see my board propped up by the console table.

“You grabbed Betsy for me?”

“You named your board Betsy like mine?”

I blush. “I liked the name. And I met the real Betsy.”

“So I heard. Yes, I grabbed Betsy for you. I figured if you’re going to be staying with us for a while, you’d want to make the most of having the beach on your doorstep. And you know we have the best surf here.”

I laugh. “Someof the best surf.”

“Ouch, you wound me.”

“Well thank you, it was a lovely thing to do, but I don’t think I can go surfing in just your boardies.”

“Well, ah,” Cove stumbles over his words and rubs the back of his neck. His cheeks turn the most adorable shade of pink I’ve ever seen. Is he embarrassed by something? Surely not the insinuation that I can’t surf topless in boy’s trunks?

“Cove?” I prompt when he doesn’t say anything.

“Please don’t think I’m a creeper or anything, but we grabbed some clothes and things for you while we were there getting your board.”

“Oh. Okay.”

“I swear it wasn’t creepy. We just hand balled a load of stuff into a bag. Grabbed your laptop, chargers, stuff like that. Please don’t be mad.”

“I’m not mad. That’s really kind. Thank you. I guess I don’t need to go back there after class on Monday to get some bits.”

“Not unless we forgot something super important.”

“In which case someone else can pick it up, because I want you to stay away from the dorms for a bit,” the prof interjects, making me frown.

Why do I have to stay away? Aren’t they taking this protection thing a little far? It’s not like anyone has hurt me, or even tried to.

“We also saw Summer while we were there,” Reef distracts me by saying.

“Oh god! I can’t believe I forgot all about contacting her yesterday. I bet she was going out of her mind with worry.” The guys exchange a glance which unnerves me a little. “What? What’s going on? She is okay, isn’t she?”

“She’s fine. I spoke to Summer, she was looking for you to, ah, give you your meds.” Cove grimaces. “I told her you were staying with me off campus for a while and that I had your prescription all sorted.”

I frown. I can’t imagine Summer just accepting that explanation; it makes no sense. Yes, sure, she knew I was sort of dating Cove, but she knows me well enough to know that I wouldn’t just disappear with some guy I barely know. And how would he have my meds? Summer always keeps them on her because she doesn’t trust me with them.

“How did she take that?” I ask carefully, trying to keep my expression blank.

“Actually, she seemed…happy for you.”

“But, if I was staying with you, why would you be in my room without me? Didn’t she ask?”

“She was in a rush, so it’s possible that she didn’t fully grasp what I was saying.”

I try really hard to read the subtext here and not jump to incorrect conclusions, but all I’m getting is Cove trying to sugarcoat the truth and let me down gently, which leads me to believe Summer was maybe glad to be rid of me?

I guess it was only a matter of time before she got sick of looking out for me and having to constantly play nursemaid to my problems and issues.
