Page 62 of Trust Me

He gave me what I wanted, thrusting deep. It wasn’t until he was buried to the hilt that I realized we had forgotten one crucial step. My own shock and dismay were reflected in his eyes.

“Shit,” he whispered. He swallowed hard. “I got tested four months ago, and it’s only been you since then. I’m safe. Have you…”

I licked my lips nervously. “No diseases and I’m on the pill, but…”

Oh, God. There was no polite way to tell a man who’s inside you that you don’t completely trust him. It’s not you, it’s me. I had thought marriage made me safe, but I had been wrong. I couldn’t risk being wrong again. My literal health—mentalandphysical—was on the line.

“I need you to wear a condom,” I whispered.

His eyes locked on mine with frightening intensity. “Right.”

He clenched his jaw, shuddering as he pulled himself free of me. My body protested and I balled my hands into fists to keep myself from holding him close. “I’m sorry.”

“Nothing to be sorry for.” He rolled the condom down his length.

“I ruined everything.”

He shoved into me, hard. “Does this feel ruined to you? Because it feels pretty damn great to me.”

It was hard to concentrate on anything but the swivel of his hips. “But I—”

“No.” He stopped, holding himself still deep inside me. He gripped my chin between his thumb and finger, forcing me to meet his gaze. “You don’t ever have to apologize for protecting your body. Not ever. This isn’t about me, so I’m not going to take it personally. It’s about you and what you need to feel safe. No matter what that is, I’m going to give it to you and I’m going tolikegiving it to you.”

My eyes felt hot and itchy. Oh, shit. I blinked quickly. I was not going to be the girl who cried during sex. Absolutely not.

“Fuck me,” I ordered.

He grinned.

Then he did exactly that.

It feltgreat.

Unfortunately, Michael refused my attempt to distract him for a second time, and so an hour later we were knocking on Suzie’s front door. She opened it, her face unreadable, and I held up the box of treats we had stopped for. “We come bearing donuts. That means you can’t yell at me.”

She raised an eyebrow and said nothing, but she stepped aside to let us in. I moved past her, heading for the kitchen, where I found Sam with Andy at his shoulder. He held his son with one hand, rubbing his back gently with the other. Adorable. Babies snuggled up against a parent never ceased to make my womb ache with longing. “Hey, Sam. I thought you were sleeping in.”

“Sam wanted to get up early to see you,” Suzie answered for him.

He side-eyed his wife. “Yeah, that’s what happened. My wife didn’t keep me up until midnight talking, and shedefinitelydidn’t wake me up at six this morning to talk some more.” His tone said the exact opposite.

Suzie glared at him.

“What?” he said innocently. “I saiddidn’t.”

Suzie groaned and I bit back nervous laughter. I imagined Suzie gave Sam quite an earful last night about what went down in the parking lot. Sam grinned at me in a way that suggested he knew all about my escape from the window. Fabulous.

“Becca and Dimitri are asleep. Carly is downstairs watchingMoana.” Suzie sat down at the table, a mug of coffee in her hand. “There’s a fresh pot. Help yourself and then disappear,” she said to Michael.

He smirked at her, clearly taking no offense, poured himself a cup and then raised the pot in my direction, eyebrows raised. I nodded and he poured a cup for me, too, and handed me the carton of cream. A quick peck on the cheek and then he was gone.

I sat across from Suzie and sipped my coffee, stalling for time.

Suzie tucked a wavy red tendril behind her ear. “So you and my brother.”

I tensed, waiting.

Suzie grinned. “That’s nice.”
